I am hoping someone has seen this button or can identify it by the few letters on the back. It is the size of a nickel. Thanks

Can't read the backmark - but it is a two piece mid to late 19th century civilian button..

Did you try electrolysis on the button? I had one that had gilt on the back and the oxidation rubbed off after 5 - 15 minutes of electrolysis. Mad the mistake though of using tape to hold the button to a piece of light cardboard and found the tape took a piece of the gilding right off the base material.

McCDig, I need to know more about electrolysis. I would like to try it. So far my cleaning efforts have been only soap detergent and a toothbrush.

That writing is known as the back marks, it usually says where it was manufactutored such as London, and the quality of the button, for example, "Rich Orange Colour London"

Coinman, so far I read SUP on the bottom as, superior quality, or superfine and the top seems to have W.M---will try giving it a better cleaning. thanks

Iron Patch, not sure about the rest of back mark, so i was going to try aluminum jelly, and maybe electrolysis. Hoping to find the maker. Thanks MassEMT for the info.

Research the effect of electrolysis on gilted items. It stripped chrome plating off an item I found.
