I just got a bug 2 as my first detector and have spent about 5 hours with it. I have read the past posts here about it and wacthed some utube vids on it. First of all it amazes me that i have found so much trash!!
My first question is can i put the coil underwater without harming it? Main question is are there suttel differances in the sounds it gives for diffrent targets? Seems like there are slight differances but my hearing is not the best so i am not sure. I went to one of my old logging jobs and found 3 horse shoes,,a bunch of shell caseings,,a lot of peices of wire,,lead bullets and shot,,(still looking for those choker chains i lost all those years ago)...i guess what i would like to know is can i have some idea what the target might be based on the sound....bullet casings do seem to have a diffrent tone.....
Thanks , parker:tag_purple:

I can only help you with the coil and water question. I recently got a Gold Bug Pro and according to Fisher the coils are water proof. They said the only problem is where the coil plug attaches to the control housing, which wouldn't be waterproof.

Hi timberjack: I too just bought a gold bug 2. It's my understanding that the GB2 has a specific purpose...to locate gold nuggets (very small gold nuggets) Sure it will locate large gold nuggets, but a lot of detectors can do that also. I've used mine a few times, mainly just learning how to ground balance. Out here in Western Kansas we don't have a lot of mineralized soil, like the kind in Colorado. (Where I plan to put it to use.) I wouldn't even think about using it as I do my White's XLT just because the two detectors have different applications.

Hopefully when I get into gold bearing country I'll be able to keep it ground balanced and find those very small gold nuggets. Even though where I'm going is pretty remote, meaning not a lot of people go there, I'm sure I run into some trash. I'll be digging every target when I get to Colorado.

A set of good old calrad earphones from tesoro, whites and others will make it all much easier. With a stereo setup with volume control to each ear seperately you can compensate for the ol'body works,or what don't quite work. Yes they are tonal a bit. Get a nugget or tiny ring and practice by burying and retrieval so you will be accustomed to the sounds. I carry a nugget glued to a red poker chip and drop, bury at least once a hour to check gb,electrical interference and batteries. GREAT machine for what it was intended for. Smallest coil rocks on miniscule specks for sure-John

I have noticed with my GB2 that the more zippy the sound the more of an alloy or larger piece of iron it is, Bottle caps and pul tabs sounds really good on the GB2 also. A lot of hot rocks and junk targets have more of a "bong" sound, its hard to tell the difference at first but with some practice you will see what Im talking about, Its the same tone sound its just not zippy, more of a bounce sound.

Here is the BEST way to practice.... get different sizes of little nuggies. Put them into a laminating machine..... 4 or five to a large page of lamination. After laminating, cut them apart so you now have five strips with different sizes of nuggets on a laminating strip 11 inches long. Now, when you use a ruler to bury them at exactly a certain number of inches, you retrieve them by just pulling the laminating strip out of the ground! Don't bother going deeper than 11 inches as the size of the nugget that will sound off then will be a WHOPPER and wont go through the machine anyway! TAKE NOTES ! TTC

That's an excellent idea! I do something similar...I use scotch tape, several strips to make it bigger and long enough so as to easily retrieve it.

Tnx. The way to make it longer than 11 inches is to use 17 inch lamination.... but seldom will that long be realistic. TTC
