Interesting. You didn't give a location, but did you by any chance find this in Oregon, or anywhere along the Columbia/Willamette River systems?

Yes I was metal detecting in about a foot of water along a river in New England. Was buried pretty good

Looks like packaging or advertising for something - almost like a tin lid. I know I’ve seen the three notched out triangle parts on something before.

I just threw the steamship out there as a remote connection but reading more about it probably unlikely... kind of a coincidence too that the Shoo Fly steamship launched in1870

It says "PAT APPL'D FOR" at the very top. It almost definitely came off of a device of some kind.

I thought it was obvious that there was a fly in the center but based on the above comment I realize it's hard to see. I highlighted it in red.20200915_091922_001.webp

Oh, I see it now, It must be the label from a pie, they used brass for everything back in those days.
