Found in a river in a couple feet of water.maybe gold cause sure looks nice coming outta the ground in water after 150 years... heres the front and back of it.

Interesting. You didn't give a location, but did you by any chance find this in Oregon, or anywhere along the Columbia/Willamette River systems?

Found in very low river in New England.

Shoo Fly was a Stern wheel driven steamship that operated on the Willamette and Columbia rivers in the 1870’s. Here’s a link to some history about it:

That's why I asked if it was found in Oregon... but the answer seems to be 'New England', which doesn't appear to have any obvious connection.

Yes I was metal detecting in about a foot of water along a river in New England. Was buried pretty good

Looks like packaging or advertising for something - almost like a tin lid. I know I’ve seen the three notched out triangle parts on something before.

I just threw the steamship out there as a remote connection but reading more about it probably unlikely... kind of a coincidence too that the Shoo Fly steamship launched in1870

According to this article it would fit the time period of the shoo fly mechanical fan... perhaps it's related?

could be cattle award or name of steamboat or even a vintage pie called shoo fly ...guess it’s a pretty common 1800’s term

It says "PAT APPL'D FOR" at the very top. It almost definitely came off of a device of some kind.

I thought it was obvious that there was a fly in the center but based on the above comment I realize it's hard to see. I highlighted it in red.

Oh, I see it now, It must be the label from a pie, they used brass for everything back in those days.
