I thought I was done metal detecting for a while after the governor’s stay at home order, but an article in the paper said going out for exercise was ok. Well I figured swinging a metal detector and digging a couple hundred holes where I kneel down and recover an object is great way to keep a 69 year old healthy so it’s exercise. And the stay at home order was to ensure social distancing and I am not near anyone while to detect so I went out. My wife is not so sure about it so I will only go twice a week instead of my usual 4 or 5 times to keep her happy, but I am back swingin the CZ21.

I have parts of campus away from the ball field where people are walking and throwing balls and such for their exercise so I started working one of those to ensure social distancing. I worked a grid as usual digging all mid and high tones. For 4.5 hours I worked the grid and finally got tired of digging pennies and pieces of high tone aluminum scraps from the sophet and facial board coverings on the building. I went to another section on the other side of the sidewalk from where I found the seated dime the last time I was on campus. About 10 feet from where I dug the dime I got a solid mid tone that just yelled pop tab but turned out to be an unmarked flat button with an intact shank. On the same pass in the grid I got a mixed mid and high tone that is usually a nickel, a shallow tab, a eaten zinc or can slaw. This one was wide so I was sure it was can slaw. What a nice surprise to see class ring number 27 and a gold one at that. 10k is funny that way, sometimes it’s a mid tone, sometimes high and then you also get the mixed high and mid. It all depends on the size, depth and position of the item in the ground. (When in doubt, dig it out!!!)

In 6 hours I managed to find 133 coins with a face value of $3.67 (112 pennies), a piece of a horseshoe from the old farm, a toasted OLD TIMER knife, a cheapy dagger charm, the ring, the flat button and a cheapy pin missing the pin (and a few slaw pieces, tabs and a pile of scrap aluminum from the construction over 50 years ago).

The class ring is a 1972 class ring made by Geiges & Clust. The company made medals for the 1904 Olympics, the Heisman trophies and other cool things before they were taken over in 1979. The ring weighs .55 troy ounces or 17.0 grams and has a blue gemstone (it tests as tourmaline or blue quartz, I’m not knowledgeable enough to tell which one it is). The best part about this ring is I only had to dig 26 aluminum can tabs to find it.

My detecting year end on April 30th (my 18th year) and so far this year I have found 8 class rings. My average is about 1 a year and this year for me to have found 8 is really crazy. I couldn’t believe another class ring had jumped under the coil of the CZ21. I have been able to return 4 of them and 2 are recent finds and with the schools closed I am having trouble getting names for the owners and getting the return process started. But I am persistent and I am going to try some alternate methods. Maybe I will get luck.

That’s 2 hunts in a row with land gold. So more gas money, recyclable metal, and not too many tabs. Thanks for looking. Stay safe out there and may your coil lead you to good things.

You're killing it on that campus. May your next gold will be a 19th century coin to go with your seated. Cingrats!

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Dig 110 pennies - get a gold ring. Got it!

Unfortunately, I've dug that 110 pennies every year at a hunt several times, gold was a couple years ago coming :(

However, I still know the "wonder" at digging one :)

Congratulations! Gotta "Like" from me on that adventure of yours :)

Bless your heart on the the great finds, and even greater "returns"! And you are absolutely right, "When in Doubt, Dig it OUT".

Thanks NZ49er that would be great. A gold coin is still on the bucket list. If I found one of those it would really make my YEAR! Keep swingin.

Awesome job on the finds wow as long as your there you could probobly pay for some College classes finding all those coins lol

I probably could afford to pay for a few, but I already have a masters degree and really have no desire to go back to school at my age. Thanks Tommy and keep swingin.

Glad you were able to get out and it looks like a killer site. It has been many years since I stumbled onto a good producer like that. Stay safe and keep it up.

Thanks. Some days it’s a killer site with goodies and other days it’s pennies and junk, but you’ve got to keep at it in the hopes that there are more nice finds waiting for you.

You stay safe as well and keep swingin.
