Hi guys....I was just talking with some friends the other day, about people hiding gold in iron boxes that will ID only as Iron ???

Make sense I guess ??? So... I'm assuming when treasure hunting in woods and other places, do you hunt and dig everything, relics etc, or is there a trick to getting around this?I would hate to think I passed up some gold in an iron box because my discrimination was on.

I guess my question is: If I find an iron box that has gold in it and, did a reverse discrimination will i pick up the gold???

Uh, no. Reverse discrimination, or any other thing, will not allow you to see past the iron. Most machines will probably "average" through a few nails, if the conductive item is big enough to over-ride them. But an entire, say coffee can (iron) or iron pot, or whatever, will definately read as iron, and you will not TID what's inside. Simply too much masking going on.

Your only hope is to hope that the signal is big enough to over-ride your discrimination. You know, like even when you nix iron, an entire iron sheet will "bleed" through. But if you're like most of us, you pass up those signals thinking "durn hubcaps!" or "no, this isn't coin sized, and I refuse to dig another piece of caste iron" etc... No doubt we've all passed a possible cache, but the only alternative is to "dig all", and then you'll be hating life indeed :-[

Another way, if you suspect a cache, is to get a two-box unit, which won't pick up any items smaller than a soda can. But then of course, you can't be coin-hunting at the same time.

Thanks...I just realized that theres is no way of getting around it.Therma imageing I think is the only way to tell. :'(So...dig away!!! :)Rob

You gotta either coin hunt or cache hunt. It's hard to do both at the same time. NO disc.

Tom is 100% right on the mark. The detector will only see the surface of the iron box. If the gold was in a jar now the detector would see the lid and the gold at the same time. It won't notice the glass jar. I would imagine a iron box would be hard to come by, but not a cast iron pot with a lid. Just my thoughts.......

Gotta dig all..... never know what you might find.

an example: a mason jar with a zink lid @ 11" deep standing up in a small wooden box. the md barely found the lid, but did not notice the 2 gold pocket watches wrapped in an old 1917 newspaper or the 31 $2.00 bills or the $21.30 in silver change / it only saw the lid , which gave a tone of iron with a halo.
I really believe that people who md out of the way places and use the discrimination on their machines have by-passed a lot of good stuff..........
So alls i have to say is "keep using your discrimination" i will eventually get to your area and get the good stuff !
by the way after cleaning, both watches work and keep good time...
respectfully , george
