Found these in two hunts...same field different areas....anyone know why there are frequently holes in the Reales? This is the second Reale I have found in this spot. The cub scout tie slide dates from 1921 to 1948 ish.

Excellent finds!

Many early coins were holed because pockets weren't standard in clothing until much later. Folks usually strung them up and wore them around the neck, or placed them in a money belt or purse.

Congratulations on finding such a great coin! Was this the same field you were detecting last fall?

Fantastic digs!
I have only ever dug one reale, and yes it is holed too. I hear it was often for jewelry but I can't imagine in those days that poeple had so much money that they could just wear it! Even make buttons out of them!! ::)

Yes..I found this this morning about 8 feet from where I found the one last Fall.

Cool! Sounds like a Great field!

They wore the coins close to themselves to keep their money safe.

This is very true. I read a story based on the diary of a pack peddler in the early 1800's and he would sew his silver coins in the waist band of his trousers so if he was robbed they would get only the coppers in his purse. Nice find and I would make a verry carfull search of that area.

Awesome find.....edit...i screwed up the year in my mind...lol

Indeed...I suspect this site will continue giving for quite some time

Too cool. I think some people wore coins on strings and chains not as jewelery but as means
to carry their money in lieu of pockets. Holed or not, it's a great find!
