Gold 20 Franc coins

I decided to add some more gold to the stash and bought some old French 20 Franc coins. They are very cool and date from the 1850s to the 1890s. The premium was about 3% over spot. I bought them mostly for the gold in them, but figure maybe in the future they could hold some numismatic value. They are in EF to AU condition.

I just cannot see spending 60+ dollars an ounce for the premiums on Maples, Krugs, etc.

Anybody here into the old European gold coins?

Are these 20 franc coins 1oz. in weight? I might look out for them.

Gold $855 an oz. today X .03% = $25.65 Not to bad, I like Gold and Silver coins myself.

If you have seen what is going on in the banks today I will never invest in a piece of paper again.

No, they are only about .186 oz of pure gold per coin. Each coin is 90 percent gold by composition.

I am not getting any more larger gold coins. Right now, the fractional size bullion (maples, eagles, etc) coins are very popular and are harder to find and have higher premiums. My view is that as gold goes up in price, fewer will be able to afford it. The smaller size coins will become even more popular and have even higher premiums.

The old European gold is a way to get smaller, fractional sizes now with lower premiums. Plus they may have some numismatic value down the road. The downside to some is that they have odd size weights, not like the regular bullion.

I agree with the fractional size coins, I like them and easy to move when needed.
Like my Pappy said " I would rather make a little off a lot than a lot off a little"

I am in Texas, and just picked up some Mexican gold coins @ 3% over spot. I agree that the premiums on us, and other gold coins are unnecessary. Just my opinion. HH Gayle

I like the 20 peso and 50 peso coins alot. I only buy the ones made in the old days though. The restrikes look the same, but I like the fact that the coin was actually made way back when. I have to get them at coin shows because the local dealers only seem to have the restrike 50 pesos in (1947). I have scored a couple of old 20 pesos locally though.
