Going to San Diego next month

Where is a good area to go for looking/digging for gems/ rock in the San Diego area? Going to go for a day and a half at the end of September.
Any suggestions?

gems of pala stuart mine, pala. mesa grande for tourmaline. oceanview mine, escondito,-near pala, reservations needed there. these are out of my southwest gem and mineral guide, except gems of pala, witch i saw on t.v. pm me if you want more info. my son is at camp pendleton.
