going to italian bar today

Italian bar equals no gold

Sorry to hear you got skunked. I have been there once. It's practically down the street, I should get there more. I found gold then. Also, I was told there is a tertiary gravel "bench" about 100 yards downstream and on the right. About 25 feet up from the stream. I have not been to the bench but downstream from there should have gold in the water. Dredgers SUCKED most of the area clean in years past. TTC

I haven't been there, but our club is trying to purchase a claim on Rose creek, down somewhere from the LDMA claim. Has only been metal detected and the claim owner has been in bad health and may be open to selling at some point...

Years ago I dredged Rose creek and did pretty good. All that area up there near the LDMA camp gets hit awful hard. Still its a good creek

Tnx, guy. Are you aware that is my BOOTCAMP pic?.... 46 years ago? ROD, Rose Cr. and Knight Cr come off of the Stan a few miles west of Italian Bar. If you will also notice that two Stoney Gulches are nearby. You can BET the STONEY word will mean tertiary gravels!! I agree with Kuger. If he wants in, I want in! Ha ha! TTC

I worked Rose Creek pretty hard in the early 80's. Rose creek is mostly for dredging below Eagle creek due to low amounts of bedrock showing which is partially due to a landslide on Eagle Creek that filled both Eagle creek and Rose creek with incredible amounts of silt and rock. Normal depths to bedrock were 4-8 feet. Went by my old tromping grounds this past summer, wow is it overgrown!!! Above Eagle creek there is still lots of bedrock to be found on Rose Creek and the gold was (is) good. As far as Italian Bar, it was a hippy commune in the late 60's and early 70's before LDMA purchased the land. Was great dredging the first few years but I think every rock in that area has been moved or run through a dredge a dozen times in the past 40 years. Seen dredges every 10 feet at Italian Bar for many years running.

:laughing7: Terry, like Spiller said, all that country has been hit pretty hard through the years. When we were kids we used to take a raft on a rope, and cross where the rope bridge used to be at Camp Nine and we would pan the Rose Creek that comes out up there. There likely is still gold at the Lower R. creek,I was just wanting to meet Oakview,BS over a cup of Joe,and you sure can be in on that!!

Kuger... was just making noise, that's all. I have more than enough stuff to do before heading to the RV in a week. Have to fabricate a #35 mesh trough for the highbanker... put together three tubs w/spouts. clean up the Gold Miner. Lots to do this week! Tnx tho. TTC

..we get dredging back trust me there are some places I will be,that you will likely want to be "in",on

I have high hopes that the club will get first crack, but who knows if they will be able to afford it, or if the claim owner who has been very ill, his wishes will be honored. I believe there are children but they want no part of prospecting, but most are interested in whatever funds it can generate. He has had a couple of guys doing a lot of detecting in the high benches, and it has traditionally produced some nice nuggs. If I come your way, I will certainly buy you all a cup of coffee, and we will shoot the breeze and last liar ain't got a chance.:icon_thumright:

Does he go by IBar Bob?

Somebody our club president knows, and I guess he is a lifetime member, but I have never met him. I got the impression that he has been ill for sometime....Who knows, could be dreamed up to sell more raffle tickets.... but I doubt it... I am going to ask around and see if anyone recognizes the name...

Okay, I feel kinda silly asking this but just where is this Italian Bar place you all are talking about? I mean the world likely has several thousand Italian Bars and a few must serve good drinks but I would like to know the general location of this one. I mean if someone can take pity on an older fella that's gonna finally have shoulder surgery in less than two weeks. Yes!

Thank you................63bkpkr

Hey 63bkpkr, Italian Bar is an LDMA claim on the South Fork of the Stanislaus River outside of Columbia, just north of Sonora in the California Mother Lode. It is about a 30 minute drive from Columbia down the river canyon to where the road crosses the river. It's 30 minutes because it is a slow dirt road.

Thank You spillercanyon, I know of another IB in NorCal so I wanted to confirm which one this thread was discussing. I would find it interesting to see a picture of the IB your are talking about, just as long as it has no GPS Lat & Long attached to it.

The IB up here is a narrow river canyon with lots of exposed bedrock, pot holes and one mean steep trail coming down to it, just another slice of paradise. No pictures to share though............63bkpkr

63Bkpkr its pretty much how you described. I have some pictures that ill see if i can get posted tonight
