Going to detect on a friend's land where there is an old wagon road...help?

He said that it has not been used in at least 100 years. It runs's on his land for a few hundred yards. Do you have any comments or ideas about detecting something like this? He also told me that there is a lot of steel on the land as a previous owner was a welder who worked on plant Bowen nearby.

I'm going out there next week. What should I expect?

Thanks,

Julien

Julien,
I wish you the best! I have the exact same situation on my land. Around 1900 a road came in from the south through the property a half mile, then forked. One leg went east to a small house, the other to the west to another small house. We now live on the west half.

Now and then I wander over to the property line and look at that old trail, wondering what, if anything, could possibly be in there. The road itself is now covered in 75 year old trees and palmettos and vines and briars. You can still see the ruts of the wagonwheels, and a little farther out on each side, the old ditch indentions. There must be a foot of mulch on top of the ground; easy pickins if I can get past the briars and mosquitoes.

They were dirt-poor farmers. Did they have anything jingling in their pockets to fall out? One day I'm going to go find out. GOOD LUCK and let us know!

Those are my favorite type of hunt!! Turn your MD up full blast and don't descrim out anything. Dig everything that makes a sound.
Even the trash might be of value or at least interresting. If you can follow the trail and find where they may have camped or stayed
near a river creek or spring, These would be the best spots to look. Of course thats probably not on your land, but you may get permission to hunt if you ask who's land it's on.
Those old roads moved side to side, back and forth due to mud holes and the need to go around them over the years. So do a pretty wide search as you go..I'd say 20 feet on both sides of current trail..Good Luck!!!
