Going through the finds bag

I was out today with a buddy digging in freshly cut hay fields. During the day I dumped my trash pouch 2 or 3 times, but things that interest me get put in the little side pocket. Anyway, I found what I though was an old advertising pen knife, thought it was cool and put it away. When I got home I was too busy cleaning my new coppers to pay any mind to the little knife............ ANYWAY, it seems to be a piece commemorating the passing of Abraham Lincoln, it has stamped on the handle “ Out lamented President” and American knife company on the other side..... moral of the story: look at your trash 😀

I had a school made buckle or ? made out of silver in the back of my truck for several months before I decided I'd better look at all the iffy finds before I chuck.
Also, I had found what I thought was half of a broken clamp for an irrigation line. It laid out in the trash pile on the back porch for a few weeks and when I went to go through all that junk and toss, I found that Half of clamp. It turned out to be a really cool half of a carraige makers badge.
Cool knife, Joe. Silver next time out for you!

I had a bent up little piece of metal I would throw in different places and finally left in the front of the driveway for months. I was cleaning the area for trash day and gave it another look before tossing it into the trash...glad I looked; it was a very well worn TRIME...lol lol

Those brass handled American Knife pocket knives are definitely CW era and frequently turn up on CW sites. I have one I found amoung a bunch of Spencer casings at a skirmish site in West Virginia.

That one is extra cool since it commemorates Lincoln's passing and can be accurately dated to 1865.

American Knife Co, Plymouth Hollow, CT, 1849-1875. In 1875 the town of Plymouth Hollow changed it's name to Thomaston and the cutlery survived until 1895. These "coined" brass handled knives were made well after the civil war also, some are still being made today. The one Joe found is very cool!! Too bad they didn't have stainless steel back then so the blades stayed good. Stainless steel invented 1916-1917, first available for cutlery use after 1919.

Nice! I dug an American Knife Co. knife with similar designs the other day. Unfortunately mine seems to have been shredded by a lawnmower.
