Are you sure that you know where to hunt on the Outer Banks?
The last time I was on the NC Outer Banks as a "Newbe" I met a very nice ranger who "allowed" me to keep my metal detector. I believe that all of our outer banks are part of the National Parks System. But, I could be wrong.

Not so. There are areas that can be hunted and have produced tons of great finds. The National park is very well defined and you will know when you are there. From the border of the park north is OK to hunt. I was there in Early April and conditions were terrible with sand piled up everywhere. No beach wrecks were seen and I drove up and down the beach with the Jeep. It was really cold, really windy and no one was on the beach at all. A good nor easter is needed to cut out the sand and expose some good targets.

I have a map of where MDing is still allowed. I even have a connection to some "special" sites as long as I keep a low profile, and fill my holes. I am stoked, but I am easily amused!Even if I only find clad, I'll have fun! Last year, we caught bluefish and perch from the beach, and pier. I need this break! If you guys have any advise as to what to look for please chime in. I don't know much about "reading" the sand formations. Thanks! jimsjinx

corolla; duck have produced in the past after a storm!

i would love to see the map!

We rented a house in OBX last year on the beach just down from the lighthouse. Bought my first MD in anticpation, never MD'd before and thought it might be fun. It was.
Did all my hunting at night, an hour here, an hour there. No treasue, no gold but I had a good time and ended up with a few bucks in clad.
My MDing turned out to be more productive than my fishing. I used a TH 3030, also nothing fancy, but it worked.
As to reading the beaches, I just scanned the areas where the people were during the day. Dug everything. Became very aquainted with pull tabs and bottle caps right from the start.

Have fun.
