I went out to a local church near me { after getting permission } and did some hunting today with my new Time Ranger. I realize that if I used alot of discrimination to try and avoid the trash, I would then possibly miss out on some gold or silver finds....Of course without using disrimination, almost every several inches the detctor would go off, and for the most part it was all junk. I then went into the highest discrimination mode which filters out iron, pulltabs, zinc pennies, foil..etc...and just hones in on 5 cents up to $1 pieces silver or non silver. Almost all my good beeps on the detcetor { 50 cent or $1 pieces on the I.D LCD} were registering 6 " -10" deep. So now im thinking, do people really dig in the ground that deep..over and over and over again, knowing that the majority of the time, its most likely to be a piece of junk ? ....

I mean digging 2"-4" and not finding anything but junk is one thing..but then having your detector tell you that there could be something of interest { probably not though} but you have you dig 10" deep to find out is almost like a joke of sorts.

Are people on here regulary digging 6"-10" holes when their detector says its found a dime or a quarter or a 50 cent piece ? If so, I commend you on your dedication to this hobby.

It's called "Payin yer dues".

My detector is all audio and analog. No display, no notches, so I have to go by sound alone and if I want nickels I have to uncover a lot of pull tabs. I carry a three gallon plastic pail in my trunk for the metal trash I dig and by fall I'll have dumped it at least once.

I relic hunt. I dig up most of what my detector signals, unless it appears to be a pipe or something obvious. The deeper the object, the better chance it is worth while. ;)

If you're only interested in coins , after you get to know your detector , you can usually tell the difference between good hits & junk . Notice I said usually ! If you're interested in relics better dig . HH

DIG IT ALL when starting out. As you get more familiar with your detector you may want to bypass some signals. I regularly dig 6 - 10 inches down without any guarantee of what I'll find down there. It's often junk, but good stuff pops out often enough to keep me digging the deep signals.

It's really a matter of preference. If you want to find the better things, dig the deep targets - all of them. If you are into clad coins, dig the good signals and walk on.

just wait I get signals deeper than that on mine you got to dig. You have it in your mind the deeper the older. So I usually pass up the 2" pull tab to dig the 12" can. Yep either we are dedicated or the sun is baking our brains. When you pull out something really great...it will be worth every hole you ever dug.

here in central and northern calif they used lead for a bunch of things, guess what comes in at the same numbers as lead GOLD so yes I will dig all targets 8" or more.
I just gave a fishing buddy about 4 or 5 lbs of lead.
I'm still looking for my first gold coin...

i have 3/5 gallon buckets of trash from last year alone(that i dragged home)
they got snowed in for the winter and now for the spring ::)

Sure you are going to dig some junk at the deeper depths, but the chance of a older coin is there. If you want a sure thing, only dig the new local school yard for clad at no deeper than 2 inches. But many like the adventure of locating that deep rare old coin. I could care less about finding lots of clad, but I'll take it till the good stuff shows itself in the bottom of the hole.

I mainly water hunt now due to bad knees and have a couple 5 gal. buckets in the garage full of bobby pins, barrettes. The other bucket has pull tabs. I hope your bringing your junk home with you or disposing of it properly an not tossing it back on the grass.
