I dug this with some junk metal. It is 4.5" tall and 2.5 inches across at the base and the tube is sealed at the smaller end. The glass has small air bubles traped in it and what appears to be two mold marks down the sides. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

I finally found the answer: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Antique...egoryZ82QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It is a lot like some of the smaller glass stoppers out of the late 1800's and early 1900's I have seen. For acid or medicine of some type.

Mortar?

I saw a bartender in the French Quarter crush fresh mint with one of these to make a mint julep for me. Go back and look for the bourbon!

BTW - That mint julep was probably the worst drink that ever passed my lips. I traded it in for scotch.

The top or what I called the base looks like a funnel but the small end of the funnel is solid glass.

Maybe it's a bud vase that goes in a metal holder ?

Mo, you may be right. I have seen varations of automobile bud vases that are similar. I'm going to lean in the auto bud vase direction. minus the metal holder.

Could this be an eye-wash cup/stopper?
