Found this today at a site that is on 1731 map, we got 6 coppers,so far one identified as 1787 CT copper..so kinda gives time frame. Its glass with assume copper wrapped around edge and feel it had to be attached to something larger, has letter A on left side of head and R on right, figure initials, but dont match ones on map, course could be different owner.Just wondered if anyone knew what its called or what it was a part of...thanks 001.webp005.webp***CORRECTION-map is dated back to 1763

Looks like Fat George. Great find! I assume the "R" is for Rex - King.

Did a google of glass cameos, quite a few came up.Got thinking, cant imagine home owner could afford getting a cameo of himself made, hole out in the middle of nowhere..odd thing we didnt find a barn site so thought maybe a business person..was a fairly decent size cellar hole..actually larger than a lot we determine from that time frame..who knows, maybe try to track property records.

I'm with ARRC. This is a serious piece. Not cameo to my eye. Aren't they usually carved from semi percious materials?

This could be the top of a momento mori ring - precursor the Victorian era mourning jewelry. Possibly reverse painted portrait under glass, also popular around the turn of the 19th C.

Here is one of George Washington made immediately following his death:

Whoever "A. R." was, he had money.

Is the piece etched or is it from a mold? I'd like to see a couple more hi-res pics. Your local historical society may be interested in this one.

Agree. He had money and likely admirers. None of the pre or post-colonial MASS governors had those initials.

The [cursed] Puritans likely wouldn't have done such a work. Quakers?

King of Poland in the early to mid 18th century was Augustus

Cool piece! Try searching "reverse cameo" or "intaglio".

Looks more like the glass or crystal from a wax seal/ fob, just missing most of the metal; at least the size is right
Numerous designs and some were even personalized so it could have depicted the original owner or could have been a tribute piece, we may never know

It looks exactly like it, only problem is the letters are not in reverse.
