I own a small house that survived the burning of Atlanta and it is situated next to the original railroad line that ran through Atlanta. One theory as to why it may have survived when most everything next to the railroad was burned is because it may have been a field hospital. It?s on one acre of land and wherever I turn soil in the yard I will uncover broken glass. In the last two summers I have gathered a bucket of broken glass. Any thoughts on why I would have this concentration?

HI ac

there could be several reasons, one being maby the yard was used to disgard trash for years.

It was common practice in the Past to just Throw your Trash out the Back door.

I thought about that but then I would think that I would find bone, metal or any other sort of trash. To date all I have found besides two horseshoes is glass, and lots of it.

Keep all the shards of glass you find, as they help to date the area.
What are some of the words embossed on the glass?
Is any of the glass a purply color?

or does it have Bubbles (BLOWN GLASS) ?

A lot of times the bottom of a jar or bottle survives since it's thicker than the rest of the jar or bottle. Look for markings on the bottom for handblown pontil mark and look at necks/lips for signs whether they were molded.

What AC.....You're finding horseshoes and glass..... ???

Wow!...... I only have horseshoes and bullets! :D

Hope you do find some really great stuff!!!

Nana ;)

Here are few examples of the glass. The lower wight piece and the goblet section is a purply color. I like the bottle piece with the 10 and 2 on it. I have found some bubbly glass that are old pieces of window, some of the bubbled window panes are still in the house.
