Dug these two items recently. The first one I dug says "Sarsaparilla, and I assumed it was for a 1890's soda stand. I could see it tacked to the side or top, advertising its product. But the second one has me stumped. it says "Don't Care". Not "I don't care", just "don't care" Both have the same curly-cu lines on the top and bottom.

About the size of a silver dollar, and made of thin copper.

At first I thought it might be part of a sentence, )or maybe like the old Burma-Shave road signs), where the proprietor would have several pieces nailed to the stand, but Hell, now I'm at a loss.

Any clues?

Anyone dug something like these before?

This inquiring mind would love to know.

Carl

Perhaps "don't care" was what ever that was left over from an earlier supply. Sort of like a chef's surprise. Perhaps it has been around awhile, and that after 2, you didn't care.

Marking this solved, Mark Parker sent me an email, here it is....

Hey, Carl—

Saw your Sarsaparilla and Don't Care "tacks" on TNet. I believe these are some sort of labels, perhaps made to be inserted into cork stoppers, for syrups or concentrates used in a soda fountain or bar. Sarsaparilla you know about, of course, and here's a recipe for "Don't-Care Syrup," published in the American Druggist & Pharmaceutical Record, Vol. 34, No. 11, June 10, 1899:

DON'T-CARE SYRUP
Brandy 1 pint.
Simple syrup 1 gallon.
Acid phosphate 1 ounce.
Mix.

All the best,

Mark Parker

Thanks Mark!
