Try the USGS map server. It gives lat/long for current features of an area and sometimes gives lat/long for features listed as historic such as churches, schools and post offices. In this context historic means "no longer exists" not just "old". I can't recall if it gives coordinates for historic towns but it's worth a try. Regardless, this is an excellent website.
