I went out on Sunday, at Miss halfdime's request, to a ghost town right up against the back of my cousin's farm. In year's past, we've dug the privies there and done some detecting; Miss and Junior halfdime enjoy scrounging for bottles on or just beneath the surface. I was happy to oblige her request; a few weeks ago, I found a 1900 Barber dime and a bunch of Indians on my cousin's property. I have to think that the Indians, at least, were in some way related to the ghost town because of where and how they were found. The Barber probably wasn't, for the same reason. I wandered around a bit, pulling a few cents in modern coinage and getting lots of junk signals. I did manage these two buttons, which I assume were off of a band uniform or something. Nearer the ghost town, I got a good solid half dollar signal and noticed the drool start to run out of each side of my mouth. Imagining what a half dollar from the Indian/Barber era would be like will do that to a man! It's been a while since a 19th century half has found its way into my pocket. I quickly knelt down to dig and was initially disappointed that it wasn't a half. The pain was softened somewhat when this Chevrolet radiator emblem showed up instead. As near as my research can tell, this is an early 30's piece. I found several similar in EBay, including modern reproductions, but this is vintage. It's an attractive piece, about three and a half inches long, and I'm happy to add it to my museum of relics!
