Getting Permission To MD Ghost Towns

If no one is there, and it's not posted or fenced ........... Well......

But if it's posted and fenced, I guess you gotta figure out who owns it. I can forewarn you though, that, unless the ghost town you have in mind is a secret to the history books, it's no doubt been hammered (owner already had many inquires) before. That is, if it's an easy to research out location, sometimes those owners are "jaded" to the whole concept. Hopefully yours in an out-of-the-way one, not in easy to access resource books.

I use old maps and google. Also ref. them in ghost town listings. If it is not listed and on old maps I google the area to see what I can find. ;D
I just need to stay out of trouble. We don't need any more bad press so to speak! TOPO's help as well.

You can also take a good look outside of the fenced boundaries of the town. You might be able to spot an area that had some activity on it. If you find such a spot, good chance it has not been hammered to death. A good shade tree or a high vantage point might be a good place to start.

Good hunting, John K

I had a heck of a time getting all of the names of the landowners who now owned the property....I knew where the ghost town was...but four different out of state owners made it a real challenge...I had to find their names and addresses through the tax office...........especially when two of them didnt like each other...I obtained permission from the property owner who held the old store property first....he deer hunted every year and had a cabin on another parcel down the road. He also allows me to camp on his property....the two owners who held different acreage that split the sawmill section didnt speak to each other, and never came there anymore.......one said yes right away ...the other said no...it took me two years to convince him...the fourth never answered any of my letters for about ten months....but I sent one off every month...finally I bought a Thinking of you card and sent it to him....on the inside I wrote "and dreaming of detecting your property" hahahah...he responded with a yes........

I did make sure that I sent them each a thank you ,updates each time I hunt there ,pictures of the finds and the history of the place...

Sheesk Gypsy, after all that effort getting permission from person who were not even there ("out of state") what kind of coins did you find??

To tell you the truth...I did it more for the historical value and preservation than anything....I am still hunting the property and have only just started getting to the good stuff...But I feel that I have made great progress considering the fact that everyone insisted there was never a town there to begin with....Because of the area its hard to get into, the road (path) floods till May and the dense undergrowth has made hunting slow... and so far I seem to hit it everytime there is a huge storm...hahaha...I have to camp there ,but I have mapped and and found foundations, cellarholes, the sawmill, general store, blacksmith and a coopers, graves, old cabins and wells.I cant really say what I have found right now, until I am finished....but I can tell you this....lots of rust.... :icon_queen:....I have a family member now working on purchasing the property (three parcels...which doesnt include where the store and several cabins were) and with any luck that will go through this summer.
