Ive had my half soaking in distilled water for a couple of days to remove the last traces of dirt on it and then I'm sending it out to be graded. I got to see a pcgs AU 53 graded 1803 half and it had less detail then mine so Im hoping mine will get at least that grade, But ya never know. I was wondering if anyone has the Overton book and can help me id the variety. Notice the Die clash on the reverse of the coin that put shield lines on the ear and face on the obverse of the coin. I will be inclosing a note in the shipping box pointing out the die clash so its not overlooked Not that it would be but ya never know. Thanks for looking HH

WOW!! Nice one! Be sure to post what you find out!

I hope you chose your grading service wisely. Sending it in to PCGS will likely only get you a "Genuine" label with no grade due to environmental damage. NGC or ANACS are ones that I would consider. Beautiful coin. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice

I hope you have better luck with your grading than I did with my half dime. If you send it to NGC you can request the Variety Plus grading, which will give a positive ID on the variety.

Lets see that puppy when you get her back!

I put together in one photo your coin with an Overton 103 variety, seems to be a match, so look and compare yourself. This one was graded as VF-25 in 1975. There are only 4 varieties as far as I know so this is probably the match for yours.
O-104, has no serif on the 3, yours does.
O-102, the D in United almost touches the wing tip feather, yours does not
O-101, again the D in United almost touches the wing tip feather, yours does not.
As far as the die clash goes, neat, but do not think it is too unusual on the early coins, I saw die clashing mentioned on another 1803 Half where I found the photo for the comparison photo.

Good luck if you send in for grading, not sure of the value, I know Bust Halves are tough, since so many outstanding examples exist in almost uncirculated condition, thus prices for circulated ones are not as high as one would hope for such a beautiful and not seen too often coin.

I broke out the Overton book when you originally found this coin, and also came up with 103.

Also for a previous comment in this thread... within the past month, PCGS has implemented "Details" grading on Genuine coins - probably to keep pace with the others. A link is here: http://forums.collectors.com/messag...eadid=832635&highlight_key=y&keyword1=genuine

Look forward to seeing how it goes...

Beautiful coin no matter what the grade. :icon_thumright:

Fantastic find--excellent quality!

All the best,

Lanny

Looking at the back comparison pics, I don't know if they match up. The stars and the arrow points don't seem to match. I suppose there are better people in the forum to correct me, but it just looks different. But no matter what the situation, I would love to find something like that in any condition!

great Banner coin ...congrats !

Details grading is not to be confused with variety grading. Detail grading is done for coins that "bear surface conditions that preclude graders from arriving at a recognized numeric grade", such as environmental damage.

I don't have a submission form in front of me, but I believe getting the exact Overton number on the label is an extra fee. Getting a coin graded is like buying a car....they nickel and dime you on options.

Gotta say that's one of the nicest US coin finds I've seen :o
Best wishes on your grading!!!

Congrats again on your amazing find sscindercoop! :notworthy:
I hope you get an 'honest' high grade for your half! :hello2:

The term 'environmental damage' really bothers me! :icon_scratch:

good luckon the submission! she's a beauty no doubt!

Waiting for the results and value of this. ;D
