For me, our neighbors got in an argument and she threw her rings out on the front lawn. Later they made up and they looked for them without success. We helped and though the grass was short, we couldn't find them on hands and knees. I knew a guy that had a detector and called him. He found them in five minutes for which we each got a beer.

The friend with the detector started showing me the ropes and I bought his detector cause he wanted a new one. I was hooked when I started reading Treasure Lost and Western & Eastern Treasures.

In the early 60's my best friends father had some kind of old metal detector and took us with him to the city fairgrounds after the fair left town ,and I was amazed at all the coins he found. No pulltabs back then so it seemed every minute or so he was finding more money than my weekly allowance.

I got into the hobby when a friend of mine at work would bring in his finds and they were all local (approx 10 miles from work). He had them by the ziplock bag full. There was no coins in it just jewelry. He also brought in some old copies of some treasure magazines. Some years later, he opened up his own detector shop and now that is where I buy all my stuff. My only problem with this hobby is that I don't go out as much as I would like to.

I thought it would allow me to retire early ;) After I got into the hobby and got a better detector than the Radio Shack special I started with, I was hooked. I just thought it was cool to pull something out of the ground that had been lost for many years. Then I met other Treasure Hunters and found out how much I had in common with them and the rest is history. I did manage to retire early but only because I retired from the Air Force. I still work for a living and probably will until I reach 65.
