With the unprecedented good weather the fields are open and detectable...not a hint of frost in the ground. I've been eyeing this area for some time and even walked over it a couple times but didn't really put anything into it. This afternoon I had a couple hours after work so I decided to do some real searching. It's a huge area very close to a river and well know for very early French occupation. I could throw a rock and hit a series of dykes built by the Acadians. Within 10 minutes of starting the hunt I found a French sized musketball (.69 cal.). I didn't think too much of it until I found another and another and another...all within a 20 foot square! Most of the musketballs are the smaller calibre but a couple are larger British sized (.75 cal.) I also found the tombac button and the other piece in the same area.

The other piece is often debated as being either a piece of harness tack called a gag loop or a sword hanger piece. I've found a couple of these before but this one is smaller than what I have found previously and it just looks different (older).

I think I am pretty close to a site but not quite on it yet. I'll be heading back soon and spreading out towards the river...

Dig and dig until you see water and then dig more because you could start flipping out Colonial French silver coins. :laughing9: You are in the right area, so hit it every which angle that geometry will allow. ;D

I wondered what those are Romeo, I got a couple myself, had no clue as to what they were. You should turn up some good finds at that site.

Hey it's really early to be out in the fields, that's sure a pile of lead.
Nice hanger too. :icon_thumright:
Good luck on the return hunt.

French silver is certainly more than possible. This area is about a mile from where I found the three Louis 14th silvers last fall.

The only place I have ever found such a concentration of musketballs has been a skirmish site...I'm hoping that this could be another skirmish site, it is definitely in the right area for activity between the French and British...

Dare to dream...but I would be happy with a nice musket side plate!

I really think you could rub that lucky horseshoe, as it still must have some warmth to it. :icon_thumright:

There's gotta be a site close! I'm guessing there wasn't any iron where you dug that stuff.... so you have to find it!

You guess right...no iron, no glass, no pottery...but the finds were very tightly grouped. I may be close to a site...probably right on top of it.

Were you right on the water? Make sure you check any down slope, even if it doesn't look like a place that would have a house. The French were weird like that. The one we found here with the patriot last Fall was like that and was completely missed the first time IH and I were there simply because everything was right at the edge on an unlikely down slope. Pretty much everything we found higher up was modern junk so it was quite shocking to see the Patriot digging old targets. Shocking with the past memory in mind, but not a surprise considering the large old site we had found in the field right beside. It sure is easy to miss a small site... and we're half good at finding the things these days!

PS... That first day I had actually made it to the border of the field and the start of the massive old site, but because I had dug junk previous, and a couple pieces in the iron, I turned around and went the other way. The main part wasn't available so is a good thing we went back. The Patriot would have 2 less Spanish and one less 1812 button.

Yup, you are on an old site. I can't wait to see what you dig. Iron Patch will be biting his nails and weeping until late April. MUAAHHHAAAAAA :laughing9:

Here's a quick insitu I took yesterday. The soil disturbances in the foreground are where the musketballs were. You can't tell from the picture but off to the right it is a steep down hill to the dyked river with a gradual decline as seen in the picture next to that. This is a huge area but I think I'm closing in...

Oh yeah... there's a site there somewhere. Do you use disc. when trying to pinpoint the spot? If I didn't have nulling I would definitely be going with zero disc.. (unless you run the detector extremely hot, but even that I wouldn't trust 100%) There has been many times I just caught a little nulling at the edge of the site, and without would have walked by, and probably left the field. One place really stands out because Ironhorse was about 100 yards ahead of me on his way to the car when I caught just enough to slow down and call him back. Within the next 30 minutes we dug quite a few holes and he had his first rare coin find. (M. Penny) The first of three I had to suffer being dug beside me.
