Hello all from a Newbie! When I was young, I was a HUGE coin collector! I had it all... the Morgans, V shields, III nickels, Mercs, Buff's, Indians.. you name it. My uncle owned a antique furniture refurb shop, and he used to give me all sorts of old coins he found in desks and such. I had at least 50 Hibernia coins with various dates... I belive some of them were 1700's. With research, I found they were from Ireland, although, now that I am older (and the invent of the Internet), I find that some Hibernia's were used as Colonial Coins as well??? I also had a Continental Dollar...... .my pride and joy of my collection.

Then, I turned 16 and sold my collection to a dealer. I got $100 bucks for the whole collection. He also told me that the Continental was a fake. Looking back on it, I was so stupid. I know I had almost $1000 worth of coins back then... stupid. I am getting back into it again. I LOVE all of your stories... and all of your posts. Keep them coming.

MORE PICS!!!! I love the pics!!

welcome from a recent newbie as well.

Man, hate those kind of stories in more ways than one. Glad you are getting back into it and don't repeat the same mistake.

Your story brought back a bad memory that was very similar but with sportscards.

I had a Uncle in antiques as well, that I would work for and do estate sales for him, when I was between 16-18 yo. I was able to put together a very impressive sportscard collection from what I collected as a kid, what my uncle would give me from finds he had, and from first pickings on estate sales.

Well now to the bad part. I ended up giving my collection to a little brother of a girlfriend i had at the time. I'm guessing my collection at the time at least went into the 10's of thousands and pieced out today with all the grading would probably get over 100k

I hate when I let my other detector do the thinking for me :'( Girl came and went. Just hope the kid did do something good with the collection and didn't use the cards to put in the spokes in his bike tires for the cool sound...

oh man, wish I wouldn't have read your story now....I'm depressed again :-\

Man I wish I had half of what you lost(sold).Sounds like you had a small fortune's worth, nowadays.Sorry to hear about it,good luck with this collection.Have you seen what the hibernia tokens alone are going for now on ebay?Yes they were an accepted form of currency in the US near the Canadian border.

Groove! Sick post there my man. I think I have your former collection! Bet your azz I paid more than a hondo for it ;D Your Cont Dollar may have been a repop, a gazillion of them have been forged. Not sure if this will make you feel better or worse..but.....I had my collection appraised recently by an expert ($40 per hour). Said expert told me that ALL of my Trade Dollars were repops. Even the ones with Chinese marks. He claimed that the "grain" of the coin was "fuzzy" under 150x magnification. Since I had acquired them from multiple sources over several years, I was certain he was wrong. Said expert offered to buy ALL of them two days later at $75 per coin.........

You never know.....
