I found a German coin in my Grandma's yard a few years ago. The date is 1940 one side has a large 5 on it and the other side has a bird figure with a swastika grey in color but I don't think its silver. Found in West Virginia

Wartime money in germany and the occupied countries was zinc. They are hard to see details when they are worn or dug so when I was stationed in Germany we just used a black magic marker to bring out the details. Looks nice in a 2x2. exanimo, ss

There are several German settlements scattered throughout Ok, Ark, MO and Texas. I would expect those coins to be older however. I brought a little bit of the local coins home with me from when I was overseas in the military and heaven only knows where they are now. I would guess some GI brought them back with him and lost or misplace them. Could even have been a tourist. I'm sure there were thousands if not millions of WWII souviners brought home after the war. My Dad had a Nazi Dagger, some coins a Luger pistol and several pieces of silver jewelry that the brought back with him. I remember a large necklace made of silver chain and dozens of small silver coins attached in a setting. These were all stolen from his car in the 1950's. That's what makes this hobby so interesting to me, just wondering about the history behind the objects one finds. It makes my imagination run wild.

Finding modern (say WW2 era to current) German clad is not unheard of. Lots of vets brought stuff like that home, as well as German POWs held here, and post-war German immigrants.

I've found pre-20th century German coinage here as well, including Colonials. Perhaps Jeef from PA may have some interesting coins, as PA was a very heavy state German immigrant wise.

Supprisngly, DOC, I don't remember ever finding any German coins. Japan, China, & a few others. BUT your right, alot of the reasons there here is WW2

Wow! I am truly amazed you have not found more German coinage there! Are you sure your detector is working? ;) j/k

Hello, I'm an Arkie too.... I checked the new Krause, Nothing listed like that for 1951, I'd sure like to see a scan of the reverse. Your coin look's silver and not like the Cupro-Nickel, I wonder if it might be a pattern coin. I checked the listings for that a well. only list a 2 Mark struck in silver. Please post a scan if you have time.

Not to bad....

I remember when my dad came back from Germany (he was in the army for 20 years), he brought back a bunch of german coins. They were not worth much at the time and they were a cheap souvinear. In fact, he said a lot of his GI buddies did the same thing. I used to love close to Ft Hood, TX and have found a couple of german coins awhile back. Nice finds regardless!

In nearly every state there are a few "German Towns", founded by whole groups of immigrants. It would not be unusual for one such immigrant to bring several of his/her coins from the homeland. That's probably how they got there or some GI returning from the war brought them home as souvenires. Monty

These 5 Mark pieces have a weight of 11,2 gms with a fineness of 7,0 gms silver and were minted between 1951-1975
