Hope this link works. I found a similar piece that has a different backing that says its an award from the Spanish to the German ariforce for volunteering during the Spanish Civil War. If you scroll down on the link then click on teh image, it show the back and gives the history of the award. Why would the one I found be on a chain rather than a pin?

Still a bit of a mystery. Don't think mine is the ones given out in Spain back in 1939. The one on the link sold for $3245.00. That would be nice.

I kinda' hate to jump in here because I don't know much about war memoribilia, but.... They appear to be two seperate medals. One with and one without the swords. The last picture seems to be the same one as posed with no swords. It may just be a lesser award much like the USA bronze star vs the silver star? But I'd bet they both had something to do with the Spanish Civil war. "It would be logical Mr. Spock." Monty

Hi Garabaldi, I was talking to you last nite at the meeting about your find, I did some research on it, it is a Spanish honor cross for next of kin for a German Soldat, ( Soldier) killed in action during the Spanish Civil War. the eagle is in the form of the Airforce insignia, I dont know if the Army had a different one, as their eagle was different, a very rare medal only a few hundred were given out. hope this helps. Dean

Thank you Dean,
I did a search on google using "Spanish Honor Cross" and found this web site,
http://www.angelfire.com/nj/ww2/spanishawards.html
This is the description they give,

"German Condor Legion Honor Cross for Next of Kin. This award was established the same day as the Spanish Cross to commemorate those legionaries who fell during the Spanish conflict. The award was a smaller version of the Spanish Cross with swords and it was produced from bronze or brass with a bronze wash. As with the Spanish Cross, the reverse was plain. It was held by a black ribbon with the colors of the Spanish flag (red-yellow-red) on its edges.
The award was presented to the next of kin in cases of soldiers killed or missing in action or if death occurred due to war related sickness. A total of 315 Honor Crosses were awarded."

I am going to go back to the site I found it and try to find the other eagle thats missing on the medallion. I think I may have broke it off with my spade. Interesting to see how much this would be worth. When I dug it I thought it was some home made deal.
Thanks for all your help.
