Don't even think about going to Jekyll for MD'ing. As a state owned island hunting anywhere on the island is strictly forbidden. It's even posted in the hand out you get as you drive onto the island.

St. Simons has public beaches but not state owned so you might be ok there. Don't know about Tybee.

I'm pretty new to the hobby and I don't understand something...

Just what is it that the State Governments have against metal detecting? "Strictly Forbidden".

Florida does this as well, except for some coastal beach areas in state parks. It's almost like, 'NO' Booze, Crack Cocaine, Voodoo rituals or Metal Detecting...

I have no idea, but some state governments are very picky about MD'ing in their parks. I used to visit Jekyll several times a year for vacation, and unfortunately learned first hand about their no MD policy.

Usually laws that prohibit something are overblown reactions to a specific problem. Only a guess here, but I would say that big holes on the beach left by unscrupulous/lazy metal detorists?, and the knee jerk reaction of somone possibly finding an artifact and the state not getting its cut are the two most likely culprits.

I would say that you are 100% correct Steve, it's a shame that a few bad apples ruin a situation for the masses. As for the artifact scenario, well politicians are megamaniac greedy scum (just my opinion). We all need to be responsible and write our Congresspersons, and vote against them if they don't change the laws.

I was down at St. Simons last year and met a gentleman who operates a detector shop in the business district at the beach. MD is OK on Tybee and St. Simons but like said earlier stay away from Jekyll it is a state park (the whole island).

Last summer I went to Tybee and had a wake up call for before sunrise. Thought I would be the only one detecting on the beach - WRONG! Tybee gets hit pretty hard but its a big beach and it gets lots of swimmers.
