Friend in Georgia sent me this request and pics. Thought some of you might be able to help out. VR. Mags

"I found this in the woods yesterday in an area near Harlem. GA. It is made of steel/iron and weighs approximately 3-5 lbs. There is no evidence of any holes for attachment(s). The “bottom” has an indentation of ¾ inch. The narrow top portion is flat across the top surface with no indication of fabricated holes."

Could it be a "pea" ? A weight to a set of scales. I found one sorta like that one that has a hook on the small end to attach to the beam...d2

weight is a guess for me too.
the indention could be for calibrating the weight with a lead pour and has fallen out. and the hanger thing, on the other end, has rusted off? but really just a guess!

Well, not sure I'd want to be digging a grenade.

Looks like most of the consensus is for the Scale Pea. Sent the info to my buddy and he said he was hoping he had a Civil War relic. Told him no, that was me not what he dug up. Appreciate the inputs. If anyone finds anything different let us all know. Thanks for the assist. VR. Mags.

Looks like a counter weight for a beam balance set of scales. Check the top (the thin end) for any evidence of where a "U" shaped (inverted) attachment has been. That was where it would be suspended from the beam. I have one very similar to that.
