I stopped by an indoor flea market couple days ago and saw this brass lamp claiming to be a George III period missing a chain Lang ?? as-is whale oil lamp. If this is so, it would be a pretty old lamp. I do have some fascination in the technology of artificial lighting throughout history, so it did get my attention. I do though have a feeling this may not be as old as they advertised it and a thought of maybe it's something the victorians reproduced, as it did seem to have good honest age, but still wonder?... I found one, dang near identical online, that seems the price has been lowered from $400. to $350. I did have a thought to buy it, but not if it really isn't from the colonial age. I'm just wondering what some of you might think about it.
Is it Old or really Old. ?? https://www.chairish.com/product/11...onial-lighting-brass-george-ii-whale-oil-lamp There's no marks, stamps or anything else like that on it.

A brief search found several similar. North Bayshore Antiques, rubylane, ancientpoint. $22 to $400. 18th/19th century. Also, the long stem is shown below the lamp on 2 of them. Good luck.

Kinda what I'm finding, but didn't see any at 22 bucks. That burner assembly did slide up from the position it sat on the post. Thanks KG

I think the card reads "Rare" George III, Whale oil lamp, no chain snuf, as is. As you have seen these lamps usually had multiple tools attached to lamp by chain not just the snuff.

Nice piece
If you are into that sort of stuff, it might be a decent buy.
I think it would be tough to find the missing parts though.

I've always been of the opinion that these lamps were made somewhere in the Middle East.

But, I have also seen them advertised as Portuguese, Italian, East Indian and of Middle Eastern origins.
I'm also unaware of this type of fluid burning lamp ever having been used in North America.

Your example looks to be British East Indian in design and definitely looks to have some age to it due to the softening of the features from years of polishing.
It also appears that the two base sections are separating where they were soldered.

Here are a couple of oil lamps purportedly identified by their sellers as Portuguese & Italian. :icon_scratch:

The lamp you show has most of accompanying hardware missing, so even priced at $89, I don't believe it's worth that.

I agree, it's not for me.

I have a question. When you look at all the creases, is the white in all of them, polish? Or silver???

It look like a solder of some kind. The bass and other parts weren't formed in single cast brass pieces, but smaller ones that looked soldered together. Overall it's in pretty sad shape the more I look at others online. There's one I saw on eBay that's got some of the utensils still and looks as if was never polished. It had a starting or BIN price about the same as this one.
