Hi all, rank amateur here.

I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to help put a date on this button. I believe it might be a General Service button but what would I know :laughing7:

Thanks

Yep a General Service Button. Probably Civil War period. We'll need to see the back to get an approximate date.

Thanks for that. I'll post that up as soon as I have it. Don't own this item yet.

Just starting out on my collecting journey and just wanted to check I'm heading in the right direction and era.

Don't want to be that sucker born every day :laughing7:

Fyrffytr1 is correct... this US Army General-Service "Enlisted-Men's ranks" uniform button is from the Indian Wars era. Specifically, this button is the M-1874 version and it was issued from that year until it was replaced in 1902 by the "Great Seal of the United States" version of eagle-button.

A key ID-clue for this version is the highly raised shield, which Fyrffytr1 already mentioned. on the civil war era version of this button, the shield is not nearly as high-raised... but note, there are one or two exceptions to that rule.

I learn something new on Tnet all the time. I didn’t know that about the shield.
Thanks guys. 👍

Thanks for your reply. I finally have an image of the back though it's not that clear. Not sure if that helps any further with identifying who made it. It is being offered to me as an Indian Wars era button so it is great to get that confirmation from experienced people.

I'm very new to this and in a land far away so having others assist me at the beginning is greatly appreciated.
