My guess is that it came from an old GE refrigerator, part of a hinge or door latch.

What does it say above the round hole?

I'm with Ant - refrigerator part. Or maybe the face from a radio tuner.

What DCMatt said - what is the writing around the round hole?

GE made everything from trains to clothes irons.

I can't find a pic of one but I think it is a faceplate from a refrigerator thermostat.

Coldness settings 1 - 9?

It is an Escutcheon for dial, now what dial is the big question,I looked through a lot and couldn't find one, the style looks fifties, but what it went on could have been so many things it is amazing how many products G.E. made I myself thought for a freezer. The numbers would have been for different settings.

Agreed. The GE logo style looks like 1956.
Or thereabouts.

This could also be a volume control nameplate for a police radio (two-way radio), or a space heater, etc..
Something that is High/Low without discreet steps (like you might see on a stove or range: Broil, etc..)
Maybe a fan motor? Mixer, Blender, ?

The weird thing is: I think I've seen this before somewhere.
I just can't place it!!
