I have a few questions about this hobby. My buddy and I are attempting to dig up some emeralds, rubies, sapphires, and whatever else of value we can find. The one question i have is where and what do these srones grow in? I was thinking in quartz veins but am not sure. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Before you go rockhounding you need to pick a location. Study what's being found, where it's being found and what to look for in a rock or mineral. Such as crystal habit. What does the mineral look like when it's worn from weathering processes. Then you have to acquire certain tools needed. Not every site is the same for the tools you need.
There's a lot that goes into rockhounding. Google some resources on rockhounding. Do some homework.
Good luck to you and your friend. It's a great hobby.

John Sinkankas has written some excellent books on the subject. Also La Rune's " Rockpecker".

Brian & Rodo nailed it. There's a lot more to rockhounding then meets the eye.

For example; ruby & sapphire are not found in quartz veins because of their chemical structure. Corundum + silica (quartz) gives a new mineral.
