Gem O Rama at Searles Lake California Pink Halite

My daughter came to me after school on Friday and said "Dad, I really want to go to this. My science teacher told us about it.". So, after spending a few minutes researching it on google & youtube we were off on Saturday morning up to Trona, Ca. for the Gem O Rama. This is a yearly event which allows you to see gem, mineral & fossil vendors from the Western US, but the real draw are the field trips on to Searles lake to collect samples of Halite, Hanksite, Sulfohalite, and Pink Halite, essentially rock salt. I won't go into anymore details except to say if you are on the West Coast you should attend this event. Some photos below of my smaller pieces.

those are great specimens! I am glad you took your daughter. who knows how this one little event will shape her life. I hope you research together & dig together. My 21 & 36 yr old still talk about the rock expeditions we had. & they still bring home rocks just like when they were little. You are building great memories.

Thanks mama. I took my 7 year old son too. They both had a great time and I had to drag my son out of the brine pools. I'm doing my best to encourage their experience with the outdoors and science.
