Any input will help. Thanks again for looking and HH!:)

It's a bit hard to tell in that condition, but, it looks to me like it has the double prong design which was started in the smog requirement versions on the early 1970's. It also looks to be an exposed, surface mount locking cap that would be seen on the side of the car, and not one that went under a license plate or door. Probably chrome plated on the outside surface at one time.

This reminds me---

I went to a flea market once a long time ago and purchased a locking gas cap.

My boss- who was a major jerk- was going on vacation for a week after work on Friday. I swiped his regular gas cap and put the locking one on it. Then threw away the key.

I was going to say it looked like the top of a bycycle bell

They're actually not all that hard to pick, or find a key that will work. In my former line of work, I ran across lots of locking caps missing the key. I only had to drill out 2-3 in the hundreds I had to remove. A 1/2" drill with a 1/2" bit makes short work of it, but, totally destroys the cap.

Agree with 1970's. Used to have one just like it on my '71 Dodge Demon (loved that car).

It was an after-market add on. Siphoning by thiefs was common during '73 to '78 because of the gas crisis and odd/even rationing days.
