Need a little input with the sounds vs. target ID. Yesterday I kept getting a bell tone for a target, but nothing would read on the display panel. This happened a few times, also in the past. But when I scan to pinpoint where the target beeps at, the machine tells me that it's around 9 inches.

Yet, it still does not provide me with any kind of target ID. >:(

Is this because it's too deep to tell me so?

Am I just barely reading the object?

Is there really something there?

Is this one of those where I need to carry a shovel with me? ::)

My machine is a GTAx550.

The red box I highlited on the display panel should show me the target.

The all metal pinpoint is giving you the most telling data - SOMETHING is there at about 9". This is very probably beyond the safe ID range of the GTA, so its a crapshoot. However, its been my experience with various Garrett GTA models that it is either:

1. A good target at goodly depth
2. A large iron or trash target at depth, like a soda can or big chunk of steel.
(normally, with large iron, the cursor jumps around)

The ODDS are that it's trash of some kind...there's just so much more of THAT than anything else. But, you are not in this for the odds, right? Since it is a repeatable Bell-Tone, its worth investigating... that Garrett is trying to tell you something. I have been pleased with exactly what you are describing - and finding a deep coin. I have also found large junk items with the same signature. There's only one way to know - STOP gawking at that display and DIG man, DIG!

Is that a picture of your DISC notch set up? If so, something else you may want to consider is to go to the "B" mode and stay there. With that "custom" set-up, your detector has way too much to try and process and signal or not signal on. Open er up and let it do its thing.

With my Ace 250 I find the depth a 50/50 accuracy at best but the target ID should indicate something with every hit. The ID is only the most likely ID and not 100%.

Try air testing and see if the ID works and what the depth shows.

Are the batteries new, I also noticed that when they are less than half my display gets wacky, but ALWAYS attempts to ID targets, even when it’s trash.

My GTI2500 gives Me a target ID when it tones.
Display problem?? I also noticed, your using alot
of discrimination. Try backing off a bit to see what
happens. Could also try resetting to factory default.
Good luck & HH

Good advice here. Most ID detectors will report something in the audio but not show anything on a meter if it's deep. Still you gotta dig it to make sure. If you just wait for the cherry pickn' coins, you will still miss many deeper targets.

Hi, a lot of good info coming in, thanks!

The pic is not of my machine, just a stock photo of one.

I keep "A mode" handy of course, but have set up "B mode" to display everything from just left of the nickel reading all to the right to Dollar reading. Only reject the lower end iron stuff. Does this work well?

i have the gti 1500 garrett and i love it. it is very good, but not perfect. we should use our experience, know where we are, beach, old home, etc, and decide to dig or not to dig. my opinion is this: i bought the detector to find stuff. i show up someplace to hunt. if there is any doubt, DIG. the more you do it, the better you will get and the less "doubt" you will find. enjoy. gf2 in tx
