I'm new to the forum and was referred by the scubadiving.com forum to post over here. By the way, this site is awesome. I have already spent hours reading through the forums. The site is definitely bookmarked. Anyway, I'm thinking of getting the Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II for Christmas and wanted to know of others experiences/reviews/recommendations. Thanks.

If you haven't read one of the field tests, check out http://losttreasure.com/fieldtests/ArchiveView07.cfm?ID=LT20000614

I've used this detector and can say that it is deep and easy to use. You don't say if you are going to use it in fresh or saltwater as this makes a big difference in your fun. Since it is an earlier PI it only has one tone so it doesn't id the target as well as the better Infinium LS. If used in freshwater you will soon wanna wrap it around a tree because it finds the smallest pieces of iron and hot rocks. It saltwater most of the small iron rusts away and you need the extra depth in the coastal sands which move around alot. Also check out http://thegoldenolde.com/
Many of us divers like the Excal for its depth and discrimination to iron.

Good Luck,
Sandman

What sort of experience do you have? A PI can be a fantastic metal detector in the right hands and location. But.....it can also be a lesson in frustration too. It would be a lot easier to answer your question based on your experience. You can email me privately if you wish.

I'm a newbie when it comes to MD'ing, but I'm a quick learner. I'm a very experienced diver. I earned my Instructor certification over 10 years ago. I have numerous certifications in technical diving. The one requirement that I needed in a detector is the ability to be submerged. I also will be using it in salt water environs mostly. I do have a budget of $600-$700.

I am a PADI sport diver and mainly dive to only around thirty feet in fresh water now, though I enjoyed night diving since I had the Jaws music going through my mind. Have to check out the diving rafts.........

A PI like the Mark II will work well for you as it responds to deep targets if you don't mind the tin cans and iron. Since air is limited I found the Excal helped a lot till I started using Hookah systems. I really liked the Tesoro Sand Shark and batteries seemed to last forever.

I have used the Sea Hunter for over 5 years now and wouldn't trade it for anything. Its the best detector for the price in my book especially for salt water. If you are working old wrecks, you usually want to dig all targets anyway. I like the Infinium, but the learning curve is steep, but once you get the hang of it, it is an awesome detector especially if you are working on land.

In the water, stick with the Sea Hunter!

Never mind Minelab and all the rest of the bollocks, the Sea Hunter II is the best there is - there's nothing else that comes close - but it's a bastard to get used to! Like learning the violin - its the 'Strad' of bunch.
