I'm still pretty new at this. Perhaps a seasoned vet knows this, but was news to me.

I was getting inconsistent feedback from my pro Pointer today. While working targets, sometimes it had good range but one time I got no feedback unless I was almost touching a large hunk of twisted steal. Gave it a new battery, a field cleaning, but it was still randomly inconsistent.

Then it it me...when you turn the pro Pointer on...it auto balances itself. If you turn it on (like I did) inches away from a shovel blade or digging tool, it wont work very well!

To prove this, hold your pro Pointer about 1" away from your digger and turn it on. Then air test it on a coin. You will get no feed back, even if you touch it!

Again, this could be old news to most of you. But it was a frustrating learning experience for me today.

This is actually a good tip and I don't think Garrett does a good job of making this clear. This is also the method you can use to "detune" the pinpointer. Detuning is invaluable on really large targets. When you come across a target that causes the pinpointer to beep fast everywhere in the hole, follow this procedure:

1. Leave the pinpointer IN the hole where it is sounding off.
2. Turn off the pinpointer while leaving it in the hole.
3. Turn on the pinpointer while leaving it in the hole.

This resets it so that its current location is now considered "zero signal". You can now move it around the hole and it will beep faster as you get closer to the target without overloading like it did before being detuned/rebalanced. I don't think a lot of people realize that this "feature" exists.

God, I love this place! Invaluable bit if advice, thank you!

This is why minelab made the profind 25,I have the garrett propointer and about 2 years of experience with it, I received my minelab profind 25 from tom at miller mdz a few days ago and i can honestly say,Its a much better pinpointer,Ive used it in mud, sand, gravel,It is spot on. The whole arguement of the Propointer having better vibration and sound is true but the arguement of it being a better pinpointer is false. If you want to up your recovery time,Its minelab all the way,I keep my headphones on constantly and keep the profind in vibrate mode. Easiest detecting in a public park i have ever experienced.Dug,Found,Covered the hole an moving in a matter of a minute.

How resistant is the overall unit to mud and wet soil? Its still early in the season. I expect most areas are sloppy. But here in Michigan, mid summer can hold similar conditions. I take good care of my equipment, but are the dials and buttons hearty enough to take mild abuse?
