i have the Garrett GTAX 550 and it has been an awesome detector up until today, i was in a totally different area than i have been before and for some reason my detector would off and on start jumping up and down the meter and putting off allot of static. is my detector broken? or is it possible interference in the area i was detecting the ground was very hard packed clay. or do you think my batteries just might be getting low, the meter for the batteries are still full???? I'm kind of worried because i paid just under $500 for this Garrett not even a month ago and it would be a bummer if something is screwed up on it. if anyone else is having this issue let me know if there is a way to fix it. thanks again everyone.

sounds like it may have been electrical interferance. were there any power lines or another power source nearby?

There was a post another member had made not long ago, from best I recall he contacted the manufacturer (don't remember which brand) & was told to give his MD a good wipe-down with a damp washcloth to discharge any static elecrticity that had built-up in his machine. He said it worked like a charm after doing so, though I can't remember what his initial problem was.

Also, I believe the title of his post contained something about Gatorade.

If there are any plug in connectors you can get to, either inside the machine or the ones for the coil, unplug them and clean them thoroughly. Sometimes, dust or a small granule of sand can get in there and disrupt the signal.

Good luck!

Was at an old park I hit some years back and my machine went goofy.

All around a huge area, blipin, needle jumpin. i looked for interference but couldnt see any...but...there were new light fixtures in the field and in the shelters.....no over head power lines so guess where they were?

Just cause you cant see it, dont mean it aint there.

very good post , this is something i keep forgetting to do :-\ so i'm going to do it now, the wife told me that wiping down the detectors with one of those dryer fabric softeners sheets would work good also for static electricity ;)

i will have to try the dryer sheet wipe down it is a little dusty from taking it out so much, and yes it was a very old park along a river that has been there since the early 1900's there went any power lines above me but it is very close to some train tracks, come to think of it it seemed to act the goofiest when the trains would pass by. do you think that might be it. i will try cleaning it really well though thanks everyone.

thats it! trains.

Does you detector ONLY act up at this one site or is it doing it all the time? If it is only at the one location, it could be underground power lines. If it is doing it all the time and cleaningit does not help it may be your coil is havig a problem.

Hope you get things working soon.

Happy Hunting
