It doesn't matter what it is - it's great!

I wonder if it's part of a victorian table setting... maybe a utensil rest? It's not like anything I recall seeing before.

Too bad there are no makers mark or hallmarks. It would be 64-1/2 % silver.

Very cool jnkhntr

Just a WAG, a cloth weight - drapes or tablecloth perhaps :icon_scratch:

Does it have any 'grip' when it's closed?

I like the theory that this could be a weight over a drape / curtain rod. When open it forms an arch. There are no grips. Thanks for the replies and of course I am open to other theories!

the numbers are most likly to mark the set to keep the parts together. Can you give us a photo of the inside of them?

That was my thought

I think this would be a bit heavy for the hair, it's a chunk! Also there is no latch or anything to keep it closed. This leads me back to the it's a weight theory. It does have a Victorian look to it. I 'm not sure specifically the picture you're requesting, the 645 pictured is on the inside near the hinge. Thanks

The photo needed is of the inside, all of it. The hing is such it has been spread a bit to far. So far it appears to be some sort of rest. It had a place to be monogrammed also. It may have originally been attached to some thing else.

Some kind of book hinge? How far will it open? Does it completely shut? I also would like to see the inside and some more different angles. The .645 is probably a .645 per cent silver mark.

It is a bread server. (it should be lightly spring loaded to keep it open) My wife has one. We used to be in the diplomatic corps and entertained a lot, so she has every silver serving piece known to man. Yours is a very nice one.

Edited to add pictures of my wife's. Not as fancy as yours...

I got this at a yard sale but I'm clueless as to what it is. It is hinged and opens and closes as the pictures show ( I hope.)
The 645 is the only mark.

Does yours have a maker, the hing knobs appear to be the same on the original post.

Mine has no markings at all. It is a more modern piece that was probably made in India. I can't recall where my wife picked it up, but if I know her, it was probably an estate sale. Bread servers are a thing of the past, not in common use today. The original poster's looks like it could actually be an antique piece.

Thanks Montana Jim and good call on the serving piece. (I'm retired USAF too.)

Thanks for the info. From the hinge part I would say they both were made by the same company, just my opinion.
