Went to about 10 garage sales on friday had a decent score. I spent $5.00 and took home about an ounce in silver, and around $40 in gold.

4 pairs of silver earrings, a pretty big silver ring, 2 silver chains (both with decent sized pendants) and a pair of 14k gold earrings that I paid 25 cents for.

I will try and post pics soon, don't have my camera at the moment.

I got rained out both days. Managed 2 sales this morning. Nothing great to speak of. Congrats on the pm finds. Silver and gold are always good, especially when they are found at bargain basement prices!

I agree, that's why I love garage sales. I always find them for dirt cheap. I used to do a ton of coin roll hunting until gas prices got too high. Now I hit local garage sales, and I've been killing it. Less driving, and I find tons of stuff for dirt prices. I still coin roll hunt now and then, but I find PM's for next to nothing almost everytime I go out to garage sales.

I used to CRH too, everySaturday morning. Now 30-40 garage sales on saturday morn. Same miles tho, always at least 40-50.

I had to change from CRH to GS. My daughter started college. It was probably 4 years ago that I switched. (she is now a senior) I am glad I switched. After a couple of years i had already enough PMs in my safe deposit box to pay for the rest of her education. Now I do it for my retirement nest egg.

PMs are drying up in my area. 3 weeks ago $4.50 in silver coins, 2 weeks ago 3 gold crowns AND THIS LAST WEEKEND 1 chain marked 925. (I tested it when I got home and it is fake. Good thing I only paid $1)

Ditto on the CRH'ing. I still get a few half dollar boxes a month and I search pennies too, but nothing like I used to. The finds are few and far between down here with halves. I also find some of the stories on the crh forum a little hard to believe but, to each his own. I find more valuables at the garage sales than I ever did CRH'ing. Precious metals are hard to find but I manage every now and then. This past weekend was good. I cleaned up on gold and silver in the form of jewelry, a couple silver rounds, a couple coins and a gold filled over 800 silver Hamilton watch. Got it all and a bunch of other stuff for a steal of a deal. I have a hard time holding on to any gold that I find though. I usually end up selling it. The wife has enough to start a jewelry store so... I'm still waiting on silver to bust open, then i'll probably sell it all too. I think $45 may be the magic number, of course $50 was the magic number last year. lol

I've had a few huge scores while CRHing, so I'm not surprised at a lot of the finds. What I am surprised about is how many coins, especially silver coins, that you guys find at yard sales. Even at estate sales they are few and far between around here. I've only found silver coins at sales twice, and I ask at every single one.

Usually it's not "yard sales" where you find the most., at least in my neck of the woods. It's estate sales where you find the most. Coins are hard to find in general but it is possible, usually it's only one or two at a time, but I have ran across collections before. Like you said you gotta ask, most of the time they aren't sitting out with everything else. I've said it over and over... the best sales to go to are estate sales that are being held by a family member or a friend of the deceased. The less "rummaging" that's been done in a house prior to the estate sale, the better. The messier (full) the house, the better. You never know what you will find digging in someones closets. At sales like this, I fill a box (or 2) of stuff and ask how much for it all. That's how you get the best deals. It's not my problem if they don't know the value of certain items.

Well stated.

I am cautious to outwardly say that GS is better than CRH. Last thing I want is for the CRH clowns to flood the Garage Sales forum.

Too late. I'm here. 8-)

Yeah, I hear that. I think most of them live in their parents basements, and the rest of them aren't old enough to move out yet. I stop in over there every now and then, usually just to take a shot or two at someone. lol

Couple years ago at a garage sale I found a small coin collection I think it was three books nickels and pennies. Asked how much and he said $3. Of course I bought it there was about $5 face. The penny collection had a 1909 VDB not an S but still there were a lot of nice older wheats and a couple wartime nickels in the nickel collection. Not a garage sale but a gun show this year I bought a pile of coins for $10 that had 2 Silver proof sets including one with a Silver Ike Dollar. I paid about face on that one. At a later show I found a belt buckle with a Morgan Dollar in it for $20 not a steal but I buy real silver dollars at $20 as long as they are recognizable as a dollar. Turned down an even offer on a trade on a gun then the guy offered two 2012 silver eagles to boot! Pretty nice boot not sure what he thought they were worth maybe a $1 each. So you can still find good deals on coins just not all the time maybe a couple times a year. If you do not look you will never find a deal.

I've had really nice scores while coin roll hunting.I've had days where I've found solid rolls of 40% kens, on several occasions. Even days where I've hit solid rolls of 90%ers. But when I boil it down to roll hunting and garage sailing, I spend less gas going to garage sales. Some of the scores are just insane, the things people sell for 25 cents, even a dollar. It just costs me less money than roll hunting, plain and simple. I do still roll hunt a little bit. I want to do some this winter, best time to do it. There's barely any garage sales in the winter, and people cash in coins a lot more to pay for heat, and other expenses. But I've killed it this year, made some money, and got a lot of free PM's from garage sales.

Yes, like the real sunken pirate coins I found about two years ago. There were 5 coins mounted on a matt and framed (with certificates on the back) here are pics of the type of coins I found.

1st coin, is an 8 Real from the Atocha, wrecked in 1622

2nd coin is a Ducaton from the ship Hollandia sunk in 1743

3rd is a set of copper cashs coin from the Admiral Gardner wreck of 1808

I sold the set to Sean Rich, the guy that appraises old guns on Pawn Stars. He lives south of me a bit.

Insane! How much did you pay and what did you sell them for??

its already started look how many posted.

yeah, it is too late. People who look for PM's know where to find them. Whether it's auctions, garage, sales or crhing. No matter what you do, it's all timing. Going to the right sales early, going to the right banks, you never know which one will hold that big score.
