I've been poking at this one for a while now. It came from a garage sale in New Braunfels, Texas. No information came with it. It's clearly something this guy had made for the object of his affections. I find no record that Harold and Miss Beaty ever married, so maybe it didn't do the trick. Can't say if it was the hair, the vest, or the tie. or maybe the mustache. I find plenty of references to Harold W. Broome around San Angelo. Emails to an apparent relative and to a Monte Noelke who wrote a column on West Texas history have gone unanswered. Next step will probably be a phone call. It's one of those mysteries you can't let go, and if he were my ancestor, I'd like a copy of this thing. I offer it as an odd image and an ongoing investigation.

I think maybe it goes with the family mentioned in this story, which also includes the story of a Colt's six-shooter fished out of an old ranch well.

And maybe this letter from H.W. Broome on behalf of his group of singing (and working) cowboys.

OMT,

What a cool and crazy picture. I can't imagine why Miss Beaty didn't go for this guy. ::)

It almost looks like one of those "Old Time Photos" you get while on vacation.

Don't be too quick to assume Mr. Broome was from the area or even from Texas. He gave this photo to Miss Beaty and wrote "you I no longer see". I'm guessing she moved away. Or he did ... Also consider the date. A lot happened over 125 years. My parents have some old pictures hanging at the house in Pennsylvania. All the pictures are of relatives from Illinois.

I know I'm not helping much, but I don't want you to narrow your research scope based on assumptions which my be inaccurate.

At least you have a name and a date. I'm not a great judge of age, but this guy could be around 30 in the photo so you can guess his birth year in the 1855 +/- 10 years range. Check the LDS genealogy page. They have the 1880 census on-line.

I agree, if this guy was part of my heritage, I'd want this photo kept in the family (so no one else would find out about him ;D ).

Good luck
