I picked this knife up at a garage sale. Can anyone give me a name on the knife style, orgin, possible date of make? It's about 13" in length, sharpened on both sides of the blade. The handle looks to be hand carved, not sure of the material though... maybe wood with a brown paint and glaze or clearcoat of some kind. The sheath is animal skin of some kind, reptile or gator maybe? I tried to take a picture of the sheath end that has a brass piece on the end that stamped around in the circle " ART.U/16/A.RS m/1. The sheath was sewn together originally but looks like someone tried to use a grey opoxy on it. Any help would be great.

Has an "arabian" look to it. Handmade?

I was saying earlier it looked like a tail. I'm getting used to the camera and picture editing so I'll post a few more pics. Thanks for the reply.

They used to sell stuffed caimans here in Florida to the tourists in the 60's and 70's and say they were alligators. I had one of those little caimans when I was a kid, stuffed with straw and shellaced. The tail broke off lol and it looked just like that if I remember right. It had the same color too. I dont recognize the curved sword.

I cant find a stuffed caiman on eBay but here is a purse and wallet to compare.

Thanks for all the posts. I've been researching the Arabic route and have found some similar knives called a Jambiya, which is an Arabic term for dagger. They are sharpened on both sides like mine is, blade made of steel, handle is usually rhino horn or wood. Here's one that's for sale on Ebay...

Something doesnt look right. What would a caiman sheath be doing on a Moroccon knife? :icon_scratch: Maybe its some kind of desert lizard. :-\ I dont know but it just looks odd. What is underneath the reptile skin? Is it indeed a tail or has it been stitched together on the backside?

The handle/grip and the curvature of the blade remind me of the ones I've seen in Oman and Yemen. I've never seen one of their blades taper to such a point though.

BigCy, looked at the link....Armadillos carry Leprosy? Damn. The guy on Bizarre Foods was eating one down in Mexico a couple of weeks ago. I'll see if he comes back whole.
