Garage sale forum. The first I click on. Whats yours?

I check this 10 or 12 times a day.It has become a habit.

Here first, last and always. I almost never look anywhere else. I did recently post in bottles and glass because I am trying to find a milk bottle from my uncle's family dairy from the '20's. Years ago I looked only in Today's Finds.........I found this site because of metal detecting, before I even bought one, joined to ask opinions on md's. Now I am addicted to yard sales, the finds, my own and everyone else's on here. I have not met any of you, the closest to that is talking on the phone to CyberDan. None of you know me, but I have pictures in my mind for all of you and some of you are, in my own stupid way, my friends.

There are other forums here?

I check this forum first...and often, it is the only forum I look at.

When I have time, I look at the What Is It forum, and when I have lots of time to kill, I look at all the forums.

Definitely click this forum first! I love reading about everyone's finds!

I think you can kind of tell just what sections people might be checking out on here by seeing if they do or do not have a MD listed. Not saying if you don't detect you wont look at "today's finds" or other MD related stuff but there is a good chance those sections wont interest those people much that is unless they are considering getting a MD. I would say the majority of those on here indeed do detect & own a MD. Tho after a while I suspect more post their finds than actually browse what others are finding on a regular basis as that gets old & kinda depressing unless you often find a lot of good stuff yourself.

I started out looking exclusively at "today's finds" but now I myself usually look here in "garage sales" first & then in no particular order "today's finds", "what is it" (this is a great section to get help & to help identify things for others), "what's it worth" & "Coin". And I might peek at CHR once in a great while too.

I can't believe there isn't a section that deals with auctions I mean you have auction houses, on site estate auctions, storage auctions, real estate auctions, car auctions, eBay pickers & so on. Plus garage sales are only a half a year or so thing (in most of the country) & so in the winter it's auctions or bust where I'm at! You always have thrift store picking in the winter but here where I am the treasures are very few & far between at those places. I personally have way better luck eBay picking then I do at those places as I always stumble across BIN items way way under priced because the seller doesn't know what it is or what it's called. I find many $20ish (including shipping) BIN items that I buy & turn right around & sell for $80ish or more.

My single best eBay pick so far was a late 70's PK Ripper BMX bicycle for $700 BIN & $50 shipping that I bought within under 5 minutes of the ad being placed. The bike would have been pretty accurately priced except for that it came with a set of very rare Hutch 3 piece cranks that I sold for $1650, I got $500 out of the frame & forks, $200 out of the pedals, $150 out of the brakes, $175 out of the gooseneck/stem, $125 out of the handlebars, $50 out of the seat, $75 out of the seat post & clamp, $75 out of the rims & tires (these were good but newer not vintage like everything else was), $25 out of the grips. Yup I spent $750 & parted it out for $3025 in a matter of a week. I love it when that happens!

Yep,This is where I go first then once in awhile the general discussion forum to see what's going there.......Scott.

I totally agree about the "Today's Finds" forum. I get depressed just looking at the stuff! Don't get me wrong...I'm more than happy for those folks, but I don't have the time to swing a MD, or the locations like some do. For instance, I remember a post where someone found 50+ Union buttons and a grain shovel full of dropped Union bullets in one field, and called it a 'ho-hum day", just because they hadn't found any Confederate stuff. I'd like to dig one single drop sometime in my life! It is depressing!!!!

I totally agree that this forum should be renamed to include auctions, thrift stores and estate sales.

Nice find and flip on the bike!

All I have to do is press "T" in my address bar and the internet takes me right here! I check out todays finds as well, I don't have a metal detector but I have always wanted one, I'll get one someday I'm sure. The garage sale section is my section though, this is where I spend most of my time.

Thanks! And ya finding civil war relics where I'm at would mostly only be items union soldiers might have brought back with them after serving & then loosing these items somehow. There are a few places where battles went on in Indiana even before the civil war but these places are all highly protected areas. I more so look for areas where notorious robbers lived, went to & or hung out at like Dillinger, the Reno Bros gang (the very first organized train robber gang in the US & there is a bunch of money missing that never turned up after they were caught). or old mobsters like Capone & many others from Chicago that would travel to southern Indiana (the French Lick area) a lot, right down where Larry Bird is from.

So ya auctions & garage sales + estate sales is where more treasure is found here. There is a lot of old money here & in the surrounding smaller cities mostly from old industry like GE, Western Electric, Chrysler, Ford, RCA, Amtrak, Navel Avionics (a very large small city like plant that did secret guidance system work on missiles & who knows what else). These industries are long gone & those people who worked there & made a real good living are getting to that age. The baby boomer generation is in full effect & auction houses have been preparing for the flood of their stuff for a while now. The market will do funny things in the next 10 years as the baby boomer generation was big & they have a lot of stuff that will end up on the market thus the market will be flooded with many nice items soon & actually it's already started but has no where near hit it's peak. Just give it another 5 years tho!

I don't think we need to separate out garage sales from auctions, estate sales or flea markets, or even browsing craigslist ads for a steal. This group is different because we buy our treasures, and also because we sell them. Here we get all the cool "Look what I bought for next to nothing" posts, all the ebay gripes, and all the "how would you describe this" posts in one neat package. We were lucky to get a dumpster diving sub forum, because what they do is closer to mining.
RE: Groups?I used to browse "What is it?" once in a while. But they can nearly all be summarized as "A useless hunk of metal that is only valuable to you because you found it, I wish I did."

This is usually my first and last stop on here. I do check out the other forums because every now and then I do get out to metal detect. Like Clovis said though, there just aren't many decent places to detect down here. Besides the beach that is and although I did buy a water unit a few years ago i'm not really into beach hunting. I'm more of a relic hunter. I think the Garage sale forum should at least be renamed, because it's way bigger than just garage sales. Maybe "the picker's corner" or something stupid like that. I also think the Collectors forums should be included on this one, they would probably get more exposure/traffic. After all we are all collectors in some degree or another.

Today's finds to get my coffee in me so I'm ready by the time I get here. :laughing7:

A few years back I suggested it be renamed "Steals and Deals". Not sure what dumpter diving subforum has to do with garage sales but whatever.

My only gripe is that I wish there was an ebay subforum because I feel like this section often becomes the "ebay customer service satellite branch" forum all too often.
