Went to a garage sale this weekend and bought this green Japanese bag. Once i got home, i realized there was something actually in it. Out came these patches. I cant seem to ID them or find a price guide. Anyone know? Thanks! Oh and also I wasnt able to find out what the bag is for.

What is the size on the pair of patches, and can we see the back? I'm not sure the Sargeant (at) Arms direction is going to prove useful... I'm not sure what the cannons have to do with that. They always (as far as I recall) are a artillery insignia of some type, but I don't recognize the other part of the emblem.???

I looks Navy to me. The US Navy's gunners mate rate has crossed cannon, and in this case, if the eagle is Kriegsmarine, which is German for Navy, then the odds are it's a German Navy rate. Or it's in a Japanese bag, perhaps Japanese Navy.

I can't find a picture of it but the range finder and crossed cannons would lead me to believe that whatever nation's rating badge it is the wearer would have similar title an duties as a U.S. Navy fire controlman. I found similar WWII Kriegsmarine rating badges with the range finder and crossed cannons but not both of them combined.

those patches are interesting for sure... been trying to find anything about the insignia for the last couple days because i am interested in military uniforms but i cannot find anything exact either. looks close to italian navy rank of sergeant major (gold chevrons) but the crossed cannons with the rangefinder combined is stumping me... pretty cool finds though!

After digging around on Google and Wikipedia, my guess is that the rank insignia is Italian and the rank is that of a Secondo Capo or Second Chief Petty Officer (equal to Petty Officer First Class in the US Navy). I couldn't find actual WW2 examples, but the stripes on an example of modern Italian Navy rank insignia is identical. Also, the modern Italian Navy Petty Officers wear their rank on their shoulder epaulettes as those in the picture seem to be. So my guess again is that they're Italian. How they wound up in a Japanese musette bag along with a Kriegsmarine tunic patch is beyond me. My guess on the rating is that of one who worked in gunnery, but in fire direction instead of a powder monkey / cannon cocker in the turrets. The item behind the crossed cannons looks like a depiction of a gun director. So the guy who originally wore this rank probably served aboard a cruiser or battleship.

It'd be interesting if that booklet could get translated. The contents of it would determine it's value. You wanna sell any of this stuff, pm me. I've bought militaria off a couple members in the past.

Looking at the book and seeing the page with the inkstamps on it, I wonder if it's the Japanese equivalent of what the Wehrmacht called a "Soldbuch" or Soldier's Book which was a combination ID and paybook.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but the shoulder boards are WW2 Italian Navy Second Class Chief Petty Officer, Gunnery Armourer.

PS- And I will pay you a fair price or trade for the breast eagle if you are interested.
