A GGGGRRRRREEEEEAAAAAATTTTTT buckle find. Any idea of date, importance, etc? One of the things I miss here in S. Korea, is the finding an occasional buckle. :( How many buckles in your collection?

Awesome find!

According to Wikipedia, The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army who had served in the American Civil War. The GAR was among the first organized interest groups in American politics. It was succeeded by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). The GAR was founded by Benjamin F. Stephenson, M.D., on April 6, 1866, in Decatur, Illinois. It held an annual "National Encampment" every year from 1866 to 1949.

Very Nice!!!!!

Great find Crow  was it found on the Mississippi or one of the smaller rivers. I live in NW MO. and I get excited everytime I see Civil war related items found here. It gives me hope that I may still be able to dig a nice buckle or button from that time period. Thanks for sharing,

HH Charlie

You see the buttons a fair amount, but not a buckle. Great find!

Great find!! The below pic could be the companion watch fob/Encampment medal. This was found in WNY and the Veterans who attended this encampment would have to have been in their 80's. You have a great find there!!!
