Gamma 6000 Coil Upgrade

Most of my hunts are a mix of open field and woods and select heavy trash areas. I have the stock 8" coil.
Does anyone have experience with the 5" dd for the gamma or greek series? How does it perform in trashy areas and is it really that much of an upgrade over just slowing the sweep and overlap with a standard coil?
Worth the price in your opinion?
I love coin shooting but with the rich history of central Virginia I also relic hunt.

I have a 5" DD for my Omega, have used it for a total of about ten minutes.

I find it just looks ridiculous down there. I think if I had to have just one coil it would be the 5 X 10 DD. There will of course be other opinioins, but Omega comes stock with such a shaped coil albeit a concentric, it's got me a lot of stuff from the iron patches. There may be sites that have produced good finds in the past might be worth a try with the 5 inch round, but "I believe " the 5 X 10 pretty much gives you the separation of a 5 with the bonus of the coverage of a 10. Furthermore it would be the size and shape of coil I'd want for any detector, I guess that is why I like the 5 X 8 on my AT Pro.

The narrow longer coils are alos very good in the woods you mention, giving you a wider swing between trees bushes, and corn stalks.

So a 5x10 DD will give me better ability to pick through iron sites and trashy areas than the stock 8" round? While still allowing a wide coverage while sweeping?

I have tried the 5x10" coil on my Gamma 6000 and while it does separate better and provides more coverage per sweep, it is not as deep as the 8" concentric losing about 3". This was confirmed by air and my test garden. If separation is what you are after then the DD's are where its at. I find the 8" concentric on the Gamma to be an ideal tradeoff coil providing great performance in all respects.

My Gamma 6000 latest version with rubber cups covering the audio jack, air tests 12" at a sens of 94 on a quarter and 11" on nickel using the standard 8" concentric. The 5x10 coil netted me a max of 9" at the same sensitivity. I always air test all my detectors when new as precisely as possible outside away from EMI and take careful notes of measured air tests. These serve as a control in case i suspect de-sense which occurs over time.

Interesting. I have an Omega on the way with the 8" concentric. I am excited now to see how well it works.

I just did a test myself with a 8" round, and saw no appreciable / measureable difference in depth between that coil, and the 5 X 10

Waving the target at a "normal" speed, not faster than you would actually swing the detector, as is done on a lot of the vids out there, and not talking about very faint sounds either.

Hey Rick, thanks for the test! That is good to know, as I was hoping the 8" would not suffer in depth compared to the stock elliptical. I was planning on getting the NEL Sharpshooter ASAP for my Omega, as I am not a huge fan of concentrics. The Omega I traded for has the 8" round already mounted, so I will give it a try at least.

Rick my response was in regards to the 5x10 DD coil not the 10" concentric coil read my reply above. The 10" concentric coil does not measure 5" by 10" it is just a 10" elliptical concentric i do not know the exact width. The 5x10" DD (Found on the goldbug Pro, F19) is noticeably shallower than the 8" round concentric ! The 10" elliptical should actually be same depth or a bit deeper than the 8 concentric.

I mainly hunt with the 10inch elliptical coil on my omega and the 8 inch on the gamma. I have switched between the 2 and have found the 8 inch to be much easier to pinpoint with and a little deeper. I think the 10 inch has a little bit better coverage and using the nose better against metal structures. The smaller than stock coils are the pros in heavy trash, gridding small areas, and working close to metal structures. Wide open spaces are not optimum places for these smaller coils. I have a NELS sharpshooter DD that works well, but in my soil has no real advantage as far as depth over the 8 inch and target separation is very similar to the 10 inch. The sharpshooter is heavier, so I use the 10 inch for most of my type of hunting. I do believe the sharp shooter would be the way to go in high mineralized ground. Good Luck!

Concentric coils. I have never used the DD in small coils. I plan to get the 5 inch DD coil someday.

Old thread but for future viewers my 2 cents,the factory 10"x5" is the best coil so far.
Mine came with 8" concentric and I bought the Nel sharp shooter.
Thought that was as good as it gets,but the chance for a new 10x5 came my way,to me its better in every way.
Put an aftermarket decal on it if needed to pacify yourself.

I've found that the 8 inch concentric search coil works better for me than the 10 inch elliptical concentric search coil does. It handles emi better, it's a tad deeper and is easier to pinpoint with. Better still is the NEL Sharpshooter search coil. It gets good depth, separates well, works great around emi and covers a lot of ground with each sweep of the search coil. I love that search coil!

I just bought a Sharpshooter for my T2se LTD and all I can say is WOW! . Obviously very light but more importantly is how it cuts through trash like a laser knife. I was able to pull nickels out of areas that had small pieces of can slaw and pull tabs. If the T2 TID stayed steady at 58, there was a nickel in the hole. I found this to be true down to 4-5 inches. I was only running default sensitivity of 60, disc at 5 and tones at 3.

Concentric coils are good in certain situations, better separation. But elepictical coils are better for dept and wider search. I own the g2 and I've got the 10" elepictical stock coil, and the standard 8" elepictical coil on my f5. But I also own the NEL elepictical coil 6x11" coil that can be used on the f5 or g2, to all honesty, the NEL coil is better and gets greater depth. I have found dimes at 9" is medium ground minerilation and good separation.

I have always wanted to try out an F5. I love that control box with all the adjustments within finger distance. Sexy looking machine for sure. How does it do as far as EMI? I have had a few FT products in the past and they are "hot" running machines, no doubt about it.
