I got to go out Saturday at an old park area we've been hunting recently. We have been finding a few relics there and I think there was a camp close by, but I don't think we have made it to the main camp yet. Working in a tall grass field I came across a good signal that appeared to be a button. Working out the hole I found a small button that was the size of a cuff button, but there was something attached to the back a round loop of metal about 1/2" diameter. Heavy mud was covering the front and back so I just placed it in my pouch. Checking my hole like all good detectors do I found a second signal, to make a long story short there were five cuff buttons in the same hole, WOW!! Never dug more that one out of the same hole before. After getting them home and cleaning I found that all five were the same and marked GAR. As best as I can figure they were officers staff buttons made around 1883 by the Waterbury co. for the GAR reunions. It looks like they may have been attached by the rings on the back to a card or something before sewing them on a cuff not sure. If anyone has any information it would be appreciated... Thanks...

Beautiful Recovery's Ash.....You very well might be right them being attached to a card. They usually came with some coat button's as well.....I'd re-check the area  Awesome piece's for the collection

Those are dandy buttons Steve, glad you got out and those sure are nice....I want one, lol. Tim

Those look great! My inlaws live in Nixa, so am hoping to do some hunting on my next visit. Know of any places close to Nixa that might be worth my time? I don't know my way around Springfield very well. Thanks!

Wow, nice finds, Congrats!!

I think the G.A.R. encampment area are lousy with G.A.R. marked memorabilia. It is not unreasonable to speculate about them being attached to a card, or a vest or something.

That is a very cool find.

I agree - very cool.

I bet, as you suggest, they were selling all kinds of mementos, then these fellas spent a week in camp drinking and farting and losing all their medals and buttons and ribbons and other GAR do-dads! More lost stuff then in a CW camp! A detecto-manic dreamland!

It is not unreasonable to speculate about the fact that they could've been purchased from Sears & Roebuck either.

Great finds! Never found a G.A.R. item. Best I could do was S.U.V.

You found a Sports Utility Vehicle...cool.

By the way...ashdigger great finds.

Sons of Union Veterans medal. :P

I found two Great Seal cuff buttons one day within a couple feet of one another and they had the same little metal loops attached to the back of them as yours. I kinda figured they were maybe pinned to the inside of the garment or something, maybe spare/replacement buttons. ??? ???

a great many tunics had removable buttons, for cleaning purposes.
i have found buttons with brass cotter keys or rings.
( i figured it out when i bought a tunic with removable buttons, duh)

Thanks for looking guys, there may be a couple of more out there I'm heading back to see. If I find them I'll let you know or any other GAR stuff Keep warm....
take care..

Nice buttons,

So many times there are more than one signal in the same hole. Good for checking and finding that little cache of buttons.

I'm posting a link in case reads don't know what G.A.R. is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Army_of_the_Republic

I made a joke earlier about Buckleboys S.U.V. post but I did have to look it up. I'm just getting into American Revolution and Civil War detecting and it seems like everyday I learn something new.

Cool!  I learn something new on this forum every day.

:)

I wasn't joking about the Sears and Roebuck catalog.  They sold GAR buttons and Eagle Buttons in vest, coat, or overcoat sizes.
