so i'm detecting an elementary school sand box with my 8 year old son today and we were just having a blast finding clad coins and an occasional trinket..... when out of the corner of my eye i notice a couple of kids walking our way with skateboards under thier arms..... one boy was about 15 and the other much younger.... anyway, just as they pass by us the older boy says to the younger one, "see, if you don't go to college you'll end up like that!" i busted out laughing!!!

.....and you replied what?.... See...I cant seem to keep my mouth shut given an prime opportunity like that . ;) I would have rattled my degrees off so fast it would have made their heads spin ....and then top it off with a "thats why I am retired at such an early age"

Folks thinking you have to do this.
Might be an idea.

Dress down, old pants, shirt; perhaps put a
shopping cart in the van.

When you get to the park, unload the cart, have
a few paper bags full of nothing, old pair of shoes
hanging on the cart. Push it to the tot
lot.

Should be worth an extra 25, 35 cents when they
see you and feel sorry for the homeless person.
(folks throwing money into the chips) ;D

Lets see now, how many lots have I hit this year,
times 25 - 35 cents per lot ;)

all have a good un...............

now that's REALLY funny!!!!!!!!! you guys are too much!

That is funny as all git out......and as one person said, they would not have been able to keep quiet...I wouldn't have either!!!

Like on the beach one day....it was my day to be heckled....the best one to me was when a bunch of young kids, late teen's - early 20's....making beeping sounds and one guy says, "Oh, there's a quarter"...thinking I could not hear him with my headphones on, I turn around and say, "Well, dang it...PICK IT UP....you may need to use it to call someone who gives a *$%#!".....I think he was somewhat embrassed :) LMAO

Since MD'ing...I can't believe how some view MD'ers as NO LIFE, NO JOB, etc....I am retired myself, mother of 3 beautiful children....and loving my new hobby!!!

Thanks for sharing that story and Happy Hunting..........Ann

I tend to keep quiet when getting heckled. Let people think what they may. That one would have made me bust up too. :D

That is pretty funny, but I haven't been heckled yet. People just seem generally interested and ask me what I've found or they leave me alone.

You should have said something like, "My 8-year old son won't have to worry about getting into a good college. He built this metal detector himself."

the kid could be right, the things i buy with the clad i find i couldn't afford to buy otherwise. I just bought another antique telephone with some of the clad i found. now I'm watching ebay for another.

I feal you all on the subject. People always like to look at you like your poor or something.

Meanwhile my unit cost more than there car.

I haven't really been bothered. But the times someone did look at me with that look you all know what I'm talking about.

I just pull out a nice silver coin or gold ring. Then they change so quick it's unreal.

There ready to go to the nearest store and get a detector.

There's been times were I told a few folks take a hike. Like one day this weird ass guy was telling me get out of the woods crazy people put bear traps in there.

In a city park. I don't think so man. Your one of the crazies. I stand my ground and take my hunting a little to serious at times.

But the look I have people leave me alone. They think I'm a gangster or drug dealer and I may be strapped with a piece.

Good story. I tend to get so focused when detecting that I don,t hear a lot of things I should. I try do do a quick look around every few minutes so I don,t get so surpised when someone taps me on the shoulder.

HAHAHA!!!

Reading ronandann's post, i think i almost busted a seam laughing. Funny how people's perceptions change with appearance.

I recently went to a wedding in Clearfield, PA (out in the sticks) and while I enjoyed the wedding and those in it alot, I had some time to kill and I really wanted to MD. Thankfully I left my MD in the car.

So I can say that I have MD'd with a nice tux on with vest, everything. Anyway, while MDing, people kept coming up asking me if I had lost something and could they help my find it and seemed to be very concerned with whether I was finding something.

It certainly was the warm vibe we all should receive as MD'ers. Not the totally unwarranted @&#^# we get most of the time.

HH!

I've gotten some crap from teenagers about damaging public property....the same kids that throw their trash on the ground, write on everything, break fences and play equipment, kick sand, pebbles and wood chips out the play area, think nothing of tearing up the grass playing games but "I" am damaging public property.....

you know the kids with the real baggy shorts ??? there were a few hanging around me yesterday, one goes running to the see-saw to jump over it and the shorts came down it the air,,,lol, when he hit they were at the knees, face first in the sand !! one of the funniest things i ever saw...........

i don't use headphone so i hear everything,, there are some good remarks , but yours is the best so far.......... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

i can just see that one in one of those 1 pic comic strips in the paper.... guy swinging a detector and a skater punk making that comment to his buddies as they walk by
