This is by far both the strangest and coolest thing that has happened to me since I started detecting!
Yesterday after work I decided to go out hunting for a second time because I went out before work but didn't find much... I was tired but drove around for a bit and finally decided on a little park to hunt about 7 miles from my place...I hunted for about 1 1/2 hrs and hadn't found anything more than a handful of clad until I hunted around a huge tree at the top of a hill near the center entrance of the park... When I kneeled down to dig the target I figured that I had another memorial cent until I caught a glimpse of it...Then I thought I was looking at the backside of a religious charm... Then I flipped it over and realized that it was a dog tag... THEN I started to laugh! "SAMMY DAVIS JUNIOR JR." ... I laughed again and put it into my pocket thinking about how funny it will be when I show it to a few people.
I got home, got cleaned up and figured that I'd make a thread in today's finds and we could have a good laugh but I was worn out from the weekend and never made the thread but did send out a few phone pics... This morning I returned to my new job which I started 3 months ago and figured that I'd bring it with me to show a couple co-workers and have a laugh... I saw a couple people that I meant to show the tag to but I was too busy & tired so never did... I did show it to my boss though... She held it in her hand and said "THAT'S ROB'S DOG"... I was a bit puzzled and she said "That was Rob's dog that he had with his EX... she lives in Portland now... you need to show that to him"... Wow, I thought... Is that possible?... A couple hours later I saw Rob... I pulled the tag out of my pocket, he looked at it, went flush and said "Where did you get that??"... I told him that I found it in a park when I was metal detecting and he said "That was my dogs tag... That's my ex's old cell number"... neither of us could believe it and were silent for a few seconds... "Do you want it?", I asked... "I can have it?".... I said Yes, it's pretty much our code of ethics as a detectorist to return a lost item to it's owner if possible... You just have to let me photograph it and get a pic of you with it and it's yours... I have a little photo booth in my office so I took a photo and then snapped one of him holding it... Done deal.
After snapping the photo I learned that Sammy Davis Junior Jr. was rescued from a shelter... He was a very dark haired German Shepherd that only had one eye and Rob is Jewish which is why he chose the name... Sammy was put down just 2 weeks ago in Portland due to old age.
It's not a wedding band or a class ring but it sure felt good when I handed over and the tag... I also have a great story to tell.
Note: The park where I found the tag is 20 miles SE of where I work.
