We're doing a round of FootPrints claims updates and Ruby came up with some current figures I thought you might find interesting:

There are 44,416 active mining claims in Arizona as of September 30, 2014.

38,846 of them are Lode, Millsite or Tunnel site claims (87.5 %).

5,570 are placer claims. (12.5 %)

9,739 Arizona claims are more than 20 years old (30 %)

133 Arizona claims are more than 100 years old - 8 of those are Placer claims.

The oldest active claim in Arizona is 134 years old.

Just a little Sunday number trivia for your entertainment. If you enjoyed this maybe we can do this for all the mining states?

Would be some very interesting statistics indeed, especially for those states with dredging issues.

Might be interesting to compare the number of claims today in a given state to 10 or 20 years ago. Interesting stuff, thanks.

Check out the Historical Claims map at Land Matters timberjack. It has mining claims graphed by square mile for every year since 1976. You can see the number of Lode and Placer claims for all those years for any give area open to location.

Wonderful website, great stuff! I'm viewing it using a kindle fire. Is this what i should be seeing -shaded coloring in the sections, no numbers, I do not see what the levels of shading represent numbers wise. Thanks again your computer illiterate friend-fowledup

It's always good to have all the info you can get for the area you're working in! Knowledge is power and even more so when you're playing hide and seek with Mother Nature. Knowing where gold has been found in the past and thinking outside the box can lead you to a great find.

One thing I think would be intersting to know is out of all the claims in each state how much money is spent on mining claims in each county & where does that money go. I do know one thing, I'm not smart enough to figure it out. Who know's maybe it's allready been done?

Click on the tool on the right of the map and then click on the part of the map you want information on. A new window will pop up and a link will be displayed in the Historic Claims Layer portion. Click on that link and then go ohhhhh.... that's cool!
